2 Mission Objective Research High Altitude Ballooning
Understand the science behind building and launching a weather balloon Develop Teamwork Use communication to design, build, and launch weather balloon. Launch and Recover a Weather Balloon

3 Key Terms Payload – Box containing cameras and sensor equipment
GPS – Global Position Satellite APRS – Automatic Packet Reporting System

4 Required Material Weather balloon Parachute Payload Radar reflector
Sensor kit (Temperature and pressure for inside and outside of payload) Cameras (x2) Tracking devices (GPS/APRS) Radar reflector Helium Scale Tarp

5 Teams Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 Emidio Patrick Gail Haley Marianna Sean

6 Team - 1 Design How to protect cameras? (Insulation)
Position cameras? (Over horizon, down, up, etc…) How to secure equipment to prevent movement during flight and landing? How to keep equipment operating at cold temperatures? Create diagram to illustrate design and label each component. Weigh equipment and calculate total payload weight. Create equipment prelaunch checklist.

7 Team -2 Test Create multiple test plans to validate design. (impact, environment, etc…) Identify defects discovered during test. Communicate ideas with design team. Create dry run to ensure design and material is ready. List items for prelaunch check list.

8 Team – 3 Weather Identify possible impact of weather on payload design. Share information with Design/Test teams. Wind aloft Temperature Launch and retrieval weather. Identify weather terms and impact. Pressure (How will pressure at higher altitude impact balloon? Air density? Etc...) Practice using various predication software to determine idea launch location. Create weather prelaunch checklist.

9 Team -4 Mission Control Identify overall mission risk and develop ideas to reduce failure. Research how to coordinate launch information with FAA. Coordinate Photo coverage of event. Work with weather group to determine possible launch locations. Calculate payload weight, helium amount (cubic feet), burst altitude. Create overall prelaunch check list. Work with Test team and schedule prelaunch dry run prior to launch day.
