Perhaps back to 15th C BCE – called “Urusalimu” in Egyptian & Babylonish literature Called “Salem” (peace) in Bible Abraham’s time and city of Melchizedek (Gen 14:18) When Israelites conquered Canaan called “Jebus” and inhabitants were Jebusites (Judges 19:10-11, 1 Chronicles 11:4) Called “Zion” and “City of David” after David conquered (2 Samuel 5:6-9; 1 Chronicles 11:4-7) On the hill Ophel which was south of current city Moved capital from Hebron to J. Ark of Covenant brought there (2 Samuel 6:12-17; 1 Chronicles 15)
