Invasive species BY: MICHAEL KIBBE, MATTHEW EVANS

2 Lionfish Origin-Southern Asia It arrived because they were used as pets and likely released into the ocean. It bumped out grouper because they eat the same small fish and shrimp. It depletes a food source which many fish depend on and those fish can’t perform their ecological jobs. More consumption of the lionfish by humans.

3 Green crab Origin- Europe It arrived on ships coming from Europe into cape cod in the 1880’s It bumped out smaller crabs, oysters, and clams It diminishes a vital food source that other fish eat and fishermen depend on clams and oysters to make money. They capture them and take them out of the ecosystem.

4 Sea Walnut Origin – native to Western Atlantic Moved to the black sea by ballast water They destroyed the zoo plankton population They contributed to the collapse of the local fisheries because they fed on zoo plankton. Introduce the beroe jellyfish to balance the ecosystem.

5 Wild Boar Origin-North Africa
pet pigs escaped or were let go into the wild and become wild It damages land and the ecosystem, and farmers crops. It eats many different types of animal eggs Kill them on sight

6 Asian Grass Carp Origin- Eastern Asia
Imported for agriculture and phytoplankton control It interferes with the reproduction of other fish Eats the basis of the food chain You need a permit to import or export them

7 Water Chestnut Origin- China and Japan
It can be transported by birds into different bodies of water. It bumps out almost all of the organism because it chokes out the pond It kills all the fish and almost all the organisms in the pond Remove it from the body of water

8 Asian Silver Carp Origin-Water around China
They were imported to help with waste water It bumps out all the smaller fish that eat plankton It changes the food chain due to the lack of smaller organisms You can put up an electric fence which blocks the fish from entering different bodies of water.

9 Snake Head Origin- Africa and Asia
They were released by pet owners and were in many fish markets It kills smaller fish because it is so aggressive It could kill a large population of fish that fisher men depend on to make money Physical removal of the fish from a body of water

10 Zebra Muscles Origin- Eastern Europe and Western Russia
The traveled in the ballasts of ships They eat tiny food particles in the water which reduces the amount of food for larva fish It can reduce the performance of boats if they attach to the motor. Clean them off your boat if you are going to travel to a new water

11 Lamprey Origin- Atlantic Ocean
Arrived through land made locks and shipping canals They bump out almost all fish They attach to fish and suck all the fluids out of them To control the Lamprey they poison the whole body of water A Kiss of Death, Lamprey Sucks Jeremy’s Blood | River Monsters | Animal Planet

12 Kudzu Origin-Japan It was brought to the Americas to feed cattle
It destroys forests and can engulf houses It kills whole forests by blocking out the sun Removing it in any way possible such as burning, disking, and grazing

13 European Starling Origin- Europe They were intentionally released
It bumps out many native birds because they have to compete for everything They damage crops and agricultural economy Control them by shooting them and poising them
