2 A Little About Myself… 2nd year in Clarkstown.
Taught 5th grade last year at West Nyack Elementary. Taught grades 1-2 and K-5 in AIS Reading, AIS Math, and Special Education in Westchester County and Orange County!

6 Literacy- Core Performance Indicators

10 Reading Journal Format
First paragraph is a summary about the night's reading (literal comprehension) Second paragraph is to discuss the reading through making connections (Text to text, text to self, or text to world), writer's craft, theme, tone, and other literary elements that were found in the reading (inferential comprehension) Third paragraph is to write questions, concern, other comments about the story. Make prediction and inferences for what will happen next in the story.

11 Our Reading Journals Reading Journals are intended to help students:
Reflect about their reading Make connections across genres and authors Come to a better understanding of the elements of literature Support their abilities to communicate their ideas in writing The Reading Journal is designed to help students get beyond the “I liked the book” phase and explore the layers of meaning in a text.

15 Snack Policy Please don't send in any foods that contain peanuts/tree nuts for snack time. Make sure your child has a healthy snack. If your child needs to buy snack, it must be purchased in the morning during breakfast time. We have a quiet working snack time. They may keep a water bottle on their desk throughout the day.

16 Homework Homework will be assigned 4 nights a week.
Students copy homework into their planner. Parent signs the planner each evening once all homework is complete. Each missed homework assignment will result in a note sent home to be signed by a parent. Homework counts towards homework rating on report cards. Monday- Thursday: Reading homework (20 minutes of reading time) and reading response in reading journal. Read Theory at least once a week. Wordly Wise page (weekly quiz on spelling or vocabulary) Study math multiplication/division facts for 10 minutes or more. Math homework page.

17 Enrichment Students encouraged to do challenge page in math each night – listed as the enrichment page. Students have opportunity to respond to multiple questions in reading response journals. Students can access Read Theory from home as often as they choose. Students encouraged to challenge themselves in all academic areas with support from their teacher and their peers!

18 Tests -Study guides when appropriate will be given. They are completed by students in preparation for a test. -All tests signed by parent and returned. -Review lesson on material in class before a test. Extra Help Mondays- 7:50-8:20 Tuesday- 7:50-8:20

19 Birthdays in Fifth Grade
Celebrating Birthdays- Students receive a certificate, birthday pencil, and extra recess time for 5th graders! Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June.
