Apply online via the college or university website College Application Week is Nov. 6 – 10 (free applications for Idaho Colleges. We will do this in your Government classes!) Take ACT or (retake) the SAT by December 2nd Apply for financial aid (FAFSA opens October 1st) everyone needs to do this! Apply for scholarships

5 Idaho College Application Week
November 6 – 10, 2017 All Government classes to the computer lab Opportunity to complete one college application for all Idaho colleges for FREE!! Will also have a task list that will include applying for scholarships, researching majors, creating FAFSA ID, etc.

Sign-up in the Counseling Office.

8 Attend MHS Scholarship and FAFSA Info Night
Thursday, September 28th 6:00- 7:30 pm in the MHS Library Learn about financial aid, FAFSA, scholarships, and paying for college. FAFSA Completion Night Tuesday, October 3rd 6:00 PM MHS Library

9 What is FAFSA? FAFSA = Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Helps pay for higher education (i.e., college, career school, grad school) Covers tuition, fees, room/board, books/supplies, and transportation Three categories: grants, work-study, and loans Who gets federal student aid? Every student who meets certain eligibility requirements can get some type of federal aid, regardless of age or family income. How do I apply? #1… Create a FAFSA ID (confirms your identity and enables you to sign your documents electronically)  Go to StudentAid.gov/fsaid #2…Complete the FAFSA application at fafsa.gov  You’ll be able to submit a FAFSA beginning October 1st!  Your parents will use their 2016 income and tax information  Schools use FAFSA information to award nonfederal aid #3… Review your Student Aid Report (or SAR).  Make sure everything you reported is accurate  The SAR usually includes a number used to determine your eligibility for financial aid Whew, right??

10 ACT Test Information Next available test is October 28th
Register by September 22nd Cost is $46.00 (no writing) or $62.50 (w/writing) Register at MHS code = Tests students in Math, English, Reading & Science. Highest score is a 36 composite… average is 22.

11 SAT Test Information Next available test is November 4th
Register by October 5th Cost $46 (no essay) or $60 (w/essay) Register at Tests students in Math, Critical Reading and Language. A perfect score is 1600 (math score + reading/language) (a score of 1220 is the equivalent of a 27 on the ACT)

12 Want to Know about Scholarships?
Check and apply for scholarships at the college you plan to attend (BSU has 9 pages of scholarships!) Check list of scholarships on the MHS website (scholarship icon on the MHS homepage) Sign up for REMIND! Class of 2018 to 81010 Look for scholarships through your church or parent’s employers Check with Civic organizations (i.e., Lions Club and Rotary Club)

13 Transcripts Transcript request forms can be found in the counseling office. “Official transcript” = sealed and mailed to the schools/program indicated on your form. “Unofficial transcript” = not sealed and can be given directly to you.

14 How do I get a letter of recommendation?
Choose a teacher who knows you! Create a resume or brag sheet. Ask teacher or counselor verbally to write the letter. Make sure to give them the resume. Give them a stamped envelope if needed and other information needed for task. Make sure to give the teacher plenty of time to write the letter at least 2 weeks.

15 Military Options Interview each branch of the military you may be interested in Army visits second Tuesday of the month (lunchtime) Air Force visits every 3rd Thursday of the month (lunchtime) Marines visits 3rd Tuesday (lunchtime) Navy visits 2nd Wednesday of the month (lunchtime) National Guard visits every 2nd Thursday (lunchtime) Consider the option packages for each branch Practice for the ASVAB Take the ASVAB The next ASVAB test is scheduled for October 4th at MHS Make a commitment to the branch that you feel best fits you
