2 Simon Bolivar Latin American revolutionary Helped win independence for his own country in 1821 Fought in revolutions throughout Latin American (nicknamed “Liberator”) Monroe knew that other European powers might try to gain control of the unstable new republics. He was also alarmed by reports that France may supply troops to help Spain regain its former colonies.

3 Monroe Doctrine (1823) Stated that the U.S. would not interfere in European colonies in Latin America Any attempt to colonize in the Western Hemisphere would be an act of hostility. Reflected how the U.S. saw itself as a dominant power in the Western Hemisphere. Secretary of State John Q. Adams helped author this document.

4 Missouri Compromise 1820- Missouri applies for statehood
At the time, the country had been equally divided (11 slave states; 11 free states) Missouri’s admittance would tip this balance in the Senate Henry Clay led Congress in working out the Missouri Compromise Missouri would be admitted as a slave state Maine would be admitted as a free state Slavery would be banned in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase north of Missouri Compromise Line
