1 Chemistry Laboratory Safety Rules

2 Protect Your Eyes Appropriate eye protection must be worn at all times! Contact lenses are not a substitute for goggles/ safety glasses.

3 Appropriate Eyewear

4 Wear appropriate protective clothing
Lab aprons must be worn during the laboratory experiments. Loose/dangling clothing can not be worn because it may dip into chemicals or fall into a flame and catch fire.

5 Wear shoes that cover your entire foot.
Sandals and open-toed shoes do not protect your feet from broken glass that is frequently found in the lab

6 Do not apply cosmetics, eat, or drink in the lab.
These activities are ways by which you can accidentally ingest harmful chemicals

7 Tie Back Loose Hair Dangling hair can fall into the Bunsen burner and catch fire or can fall into a chemical solution P.S. Burning hair REALLY STINKS!

8 Any long sleeved clothing must be pulled up to the elbow!

9 Know the safety equipment
Eye wash fountain Safety shower Fire extinguisher Emergency exits

10 Work with volatile chemicals under a fume hood.

11 Do not smell any chemicals directly!
Smell chemicals only if your teacher specifically tells you to do so, then use your hand to fan the vapor to your nose.

12 Dispensing Chemicals!!! - NEVER PUT USED OR UNUSED CHEMICALS BACK IN THEIR ORGINAL CONTAINERS!!! -Pour from large containers to smaller ones.

13 Always ADD ACID to water

14 Check glassware for stars or cracks.
If there are any cracks, DO NOT USE IT

15 Never remove chemicals from the laboratory.
Never place chemicals directly on the lab tables or measuring devices!! Always use a plastic weighing boat.

16 Handle hot glassware with gloves or beaker tongs.
REMEMBER: HOT GLASS AND COOL GLASS LOOK IDENTICAL!

17 Heat test tubes at an angle away from yourself and others.

18 Broken Glassware Accidents happen!
Broken glass will be handled by a teacher and placed in the cardboard box! DO NOT CLEAN ANY BREAKS YOURSELF!.

19 Know the hazards of the materials being used.
Read and reread labels carefully to make sure that you are using the right chemical. Pay attention to the warnings about the chemicals used in the lab.

20 Know how to dispose of waste
Dispose of all waste materials according to your instructional procedure or your teacher’s instructions ? ? ? ?

21 Wash your hands with soap and water before leaving.
This rule applies even if you have been wearing gloves!

22 Lab Materials Lab hardware will be returned to the appropriate location. Goggles and aprons must not be removed until all cleanup is complete and you have already washed your hands.

23 Spread in a sweeping motion.
FIRE SAFETY PASS technique Pull the pin. Aim the nozzle. Squeeze the handle. Spread in a sweeping motion. Fire Triangle

24 Demonstrate safe behavior
For any type of spill or accident. Always notify a teacher first!! Do not take matters into your own hands. ASSUME ALL CHEMICALS ARE DANGEROUS!

25 Remember that the lab is a place for serious work!
Careless behavior may endanger yourself and others and will not be tolerated!

26 Report any accidents or unsafe conditions immediately!
