1 Los ojos de la recreación
Early years topic box: Los ojos de la recreación (Playground games)

2 Teacher’s notes Activity
Modern Languages I gain a deeper understanding of my first language and appreciate the richness and interconnected nature of languages In everyday activity and play, I explore and make choices to develop my learning and interests. I am encouraged to use and share my experiences. HWB 0-19a I am enjoying daily opportunities to participate in different kinds of energetic play, both outdoors and indoors. HWB 0-25a Activity The aim of this choice topic is to give instructions on a number of playground games used in Spanish. Prior learning: 1. Basic greetings 2. Numbers 1-10

3 La rayuela (Hopscotch)
Key vocab: Tierra - earth Cielo - sky Pierdiste - missed Ganaste - won Infierno - hell Pupils start from la tierra (earth). They take it in turns to throw a stone, aiming for the numbers in sequence. If they miss a number, they lose their turn. If they touch a line, they have to start again. They must not land in el infierno (hell). The first child to reach el cielo (sky) is the winner.

4 1-2-3 sol Key vocab: Uno - one Dos - two Tres - three Sol - sun
Ganaste - won All the children stand on a line apart from one child, who stands on the opposite side of the playground with his back to them. They try to move forwards as he says Uno, dos, tres … sol. He turns round, and any child still moving is out. The first child to reach the speaker and touch his back is the winner.

5 La pelota de los prisioneros
(Dodgeball) Same rules as dodgeball, 2 teams and 1 ball. If a person from the other team is touched under the knees they must go into prison. They then take the ball and if they managed to touch someone from the other team, they are free. If not, they must stay in prison. Key vocab: Equipo - team Prisoneros - prisonners Toca/tocad - hit

6 Hielito/Pica (Sparrowhawk/Tig)
Key vocab: Hielito/pica - ‘It’ Voy - I’m coming La lleva - Caught One child is el hielo (the sparrowhawk) and stands in the middle of the playground. The other children stand at one end. When the sparrowhawk calls out voy, the other children have to run across the playground without being caught. If the sparrowhawk catches them, he calls out la lleva and they become sparrowhawks too.

7 Pobre gatito mío (Poor little sick cat)
Children sit in a circle. One child pretends to be a cat and goes to another child, who has to say Pobre gatito mío without laughing. If he laughs, he becomes the cat. If not, the cat goes to another child.

8 Las escondidas (Hide and seek)
Key vocab: Aquí voy - Here I come (Name) allí estás-(Name) is here! One child hides their eyes and counts to whatever number is appropriate to the size and amount of children playing. This could be done in Spanish if possible. When the child has finished counting he/she shouts Aquí voy and looks for the others who have hidden. If the child finds one of them he/she shouts (Name) allí estás and that child helps them find the others.
