7 Professional Development Requirements for Beginning Teachers
Beginning Teachers hired to work for the Swain County School System are expected to continue their own professional learning and pursue their own professional development needs, as are all professional educators. School-based administrators and directors, mentor teachers, and county office level support personnel are available to support and assist with these efforts. Principals, with mentor advisement, have flexibility in determining CEU content requirements based on needs of the BT; however, should the BT appear to be progressing as expected, the following are recommended: Within the first three years of being hired, BTs should complete (1) Continuing Education Unit (CEU) in literacy topics, one (1) CEU in your specific academic content area; and (1) in classroom management. Regardless of professional development content decided upon by principal, mentor and BT, all BTs must accumulate a minimum of (3) CEUs within the first three years. (Principal and mentor may agree that other topics are needed and substitute those for recommended topics. An example of a substitution might be content or subject area professional development if principal or mentor feel the BT has insufficient content area knowledge). More Specific Information About CEU Requirements Specifically, literacy topics may be anything from reading strategies or comprehension issues at Pre-K through grade 8, to reading across the curriculum or reading in the content areas as possibly more appropriate topics for middle and high school teachers (of subjects other than the language arts). CEUs may be gained from additional coursework through an approved university program (perhaps in pursuit of an advanced degree), various conferences or workshops on the topics and issues, to faculty discussion or book study groups, to topics and meeting arranged by the BT Coordinator. ALL professional development activities require Prior Approval and should include follow-up documentation of activities, application of professional learning gained and analysis on student impact in the classroom. These activities and follow- up documentation are posted through “My Learning Plan” software. A variety of professional development opportunities will arise throughout the school year and summer months, and many will be available online. BTs much check school mail regularly in order to be advised of these opportunities.
