1 Energy, Consumption and Distribution in Canada
Grade 9 Geography

2 Think about all the ways we use Energy in our daily life?
Using the Handout “Energy Use in Canada- Introduction” Complete the 1st section Before we begin…

3 Where do you use your energy?

4 Canadian Energy Usage Canadians are considered one of the largest energy CONSUMERS of the world! Why do you think this is so? Think, Pair + Share Brainstorm with a partner why you think so?

5 Why do we use sooo much energy in Canada?
Long, cold winters require heating Hot, humid summers require air conditioning Differs by PROVINCE + LOCATION/WEATHER

6 Large size of our country means we drive or fly to get from place to place

7 Our Economy uses Energy
Economy means the flow of money in our country Canada does well money wise due to our industries Products + services from our industries are sold overseas (exported) and make us $$$ These industries, both PRIMARY and SECONDARY require energy!

8 Standard of Living Canada is a Developed country with an expected (improved) standard of living High living standards mean larger per person income Extra money= extra spending This means that we have HIGH consumption habits already

9 Attitude! We value comfort over energy conservation because our energy is relatively cheap

10 Where does energy come from?

11 Types of Energy in Canada
Conventional Alternative Renewable Non-Renewable

12 What kinds of Energy do we use in Canada

13 Renewable and Alternative: Hydroelectricity
This is energy used from the water flow, used to turn turbines to create electricity that is useable by humans Let’s take a look how it works! Video: NTQix8

14 Non-Renewable: Coal (Fossil Fuel) Energy
Coal power is when an earth’s compound is burned for energy Referred to as Thermal Electric Power It can be very damaging to the environment in its extraction and burning process Many countries across the world depend on coal energy Let’s Take a how this works lated

15 Nuclear Energy Many people are very scared of this type of energy
If there is a mistake it can be catastrophic (very dangerous) Very efficient form of energy using the splitting of Uranium or Lithium atoms to create heat Heat is used to turn STEAM turbines (wheels) to generate electricity Let’s take a look T-F81vh14

16 ALTERNATIVE Hydroelectric Solar Wind Geothermal Biomass

17 Energy Projects in Canada
Canada is a leading competitor for energy as an export We have some MAJOR PROJECTS on the go for creating more energy These are called MEGA PROJECTS

18 Major Energy Projects in Canada
Alberta’s Athabasca oil sands Open pit mine idea Oil trapped with dirt Major process to dig, extract and separate Major environmental concerns Newfoundland’s Hibernia oil platform Oil Reserve off Newfoundland’s coast “Offshore oil drilling” Major environmental concerns Very profitable for Canada (export oil)

19 Major Projects in Canada
Labrador’s Churchill Falls Major hydro electric power plant The Churchill Falls Generating Station is one of the largest underground hydroelectric powerhouses in the world It provides clean, renewable energy to millions of consumers throughout North America. Eleven turbines harness the power of the massive Churchill River, with a generating capacity of 5,428 megawatts.

20 Quebec’s James Bay Project
In 1971, Hydro-Québec and the Québec government initiated the James Bay Project A monumental hydroelectric-power development on the east coast of James Bay. Over the course of two phases they built a total of eight generating stations, allowing for the pollution-free production of a significant portion of Québec's electricity. However, the projects also profoundly disrupted the environment and the Indigenous communities living in the region, the effects of which are still felt today.
