3 I. Talking about people and things you know

4 a) Vocabulary aplicado/a studious creativo/a creative distra í do/a absent-minded entusiasta enthusiastic estricto/a strict exigente demanding flojo/a lazy generoso/a generous honesto/a honest justo/a fair responsible torpe clumsy I.

5 b) Ser vs. Estar Use ser to talk about qualities that define or chracterize people and things (personality, nationality, size, color, etc.) Ex. Juan Luis Guerra es un cantante dominicano. Es alto y delgado. Translation: Juan Luis Guerra is a Dominican singer. He is tall and thin. Use estar to say: 1. where something is located 2. to describe how someone feels 3. or to describe states or conditions. Ex. Juan est á en su cuarto. Despu é s de bailar, est á muy cansado. Translation: Juan is in his room. After dancing, he is very tired. I.

6 c) Conocer Conocer means to know (someone) or to be familiar with (something). The yo form is irregular in the present tense. Otherwise, conocer is a regular – er verb. Conjugation: Yo – conozco T ú – conoces É l/ella – conoce Nos – conocemos Ellos/ellas - conocen I.

7 c) Conocer Pt. 2 Conocer is followed by a when talking about people. Ex. Nosotros conocemos a Mercedes pero no conocemos su casa. Translation: We know Mercedes but we are not familiar with her house. I.

8 c) Conocer Pt. 3 To find out if a friend knows someone, ask: The response might be: Conoces a los profesores Ram í rez y G ó mez? Translation: Do you know professors Ramirez and Gomez? No, no los conozco. Qui é nes son? Translation: No, I don t know them. Who are they? Conoces a Mar í a Luisa? Translation: Do you know Maria Luisa? S í, es la nueva estudiante que est á en mi clase de qu í mica. Es buena gente, pero un poco floja. Translation: Yes, she is the new student in my chemistry class. She is a good person, but little lazy. ? ? ? I.

9 d) Conocer Pt. 4 I. To find out if a friend is familiar with something, ask: The response might be: ¿ Conoces el restaurante El Rinc ó n? S í, es mi restaurante mexicano favorito.

11 a) Vocabulary m á s … que more … than menos … que less than mayor que older than menor que younger than mejor que better than peor que worse than II.

12 b) To compare people and things, say: Michael es m á s famoso que De Shon. Michael is more famous than De Shon. De Shon es menos famoso que Michael. De Shon is less famous than Michael. Michael es menor que De Shon. Michael is younger than De Shon. De Shon es mayor que Michael. De Shon is older than Michael. Mi hermano dice que De Shon toca la guitarra mejor que Michael. My brother says that De Shon plays the guitar better than Michael. Mi hermana dice que De Shon juega al basquetbol peor que Michael. My sister says that De Shon plays basketball worse than Michael.
