EThekwini Municipality has under its custodianship, seven Local History Museums (LHM): Bergtheil Museum, Cato Manor Heritage Centre, KwaMuhle Museum, Old Court House Museum, Old House Museum, Pinetown Museum Port Natal Maritime Museum
6
City Heritage Landscape
Through the Liberation Heritage Route project and strategic partnerships with other departments new sites have been earmarked to be cultural institutions. These involve: Gandhi Settlement, Mpumalanga Heritage Centre, Loram House, J.L. Dube, Inanda Seminary, Mxenge House, Dr. Pixley ka Isaka Seme House, Msizi Dube House and others.
7
Challenge The eThekwini Municipal Area is a rich cultural landscape
It consists of a number of tangible and intangible heritage that play a crucial role in shaping cultural identity of the city. Some of these heritage resources are know, and some are not. The Local History Museum is continuously discovering and researching the heritage resources that were previously unknown.
8
Challenge More heritage resources, tangible and intangible, still need to be discovered. The people in their communities have insurmountable knowledge about their cultural resources. Although LHM is positioned as the reservoir of all cultural resources of the EMA, not all the knowledge reaches LHM from communities.
9
Challenge On the other end, LHM is seeking innovative ways to get people to engage with their history and cultural heritage. So this challenge emanates from LHM’s bid to relay information innovatively to the public about the City’s heritage resources
10
Challenge It also seeks to allow the public to alert LHM of their unknown heritage resources (old photographs, documents, oral history etc.) in a very accessible, interactive and stimulating manner!
11
Expected Outcome To improve access to heritage, and foster more interest in more innovative ways To increase visitorship to our museums To discover more heritage resources in our city and allow the public to be at the forefront To link our museums with various points/places of interest To fuse in technology so as to attract the world to pay attention to the rich eThekwini cultural landscape
