1 ANSWERING QUESTIONS IN PE
COMMAND WORDS ‘EXPLAIN’

2 EXPLANATION ANSWER CONTENT & STRUCTURE
PROVIDING REASONS WHY YOU CHOSE A METHOD/AN APPROACH. JUSTIFYING TO THE EXAMINER WHY YOUR SELECTION WAS A GOOD ONE. STATE WHAT YOU SELECTED. JUSTIFY YOUR STATEMENT; WHAT EFFECT DID IT HAVE?

3 COMMON QUESTIONS DATA COLLECTION METHODS
EXPLAIN WHY WE COLLECT DATA ON SOCIAL FACTORS BEFORE BEGINNING A PROGRAMME OF WORK. (4). EXPLAIN WHY YOU CHOSE THESE 2 METHODS TO COLLECT DATA ON THE EMOTIONAL FACTOR. (4). EXPLAIN THE LIMITATIONS OF USING A MODEL PERFORMER WHEN COLLECTING DATA ON THE PHYSICAL FACTOR. (4).

EXEMPLAR ANSWERS (1) 1) KEY: STATEMENT. LINKING WORD/PHRASE. JUSTIFICATION: EFFECT IT HAD. 'It is important to collect data before beginning a programme of work so I can identify my strengths and weaknesses. 'As a result, I can create an appropriate training programme to turn my weaknesses into strengths. Moreover, in identifying my weaknesses, I can select relevant approaches at the correct intensity level to develop this area within the context of my sport. Another reason for collecting data before developing my programme is to get a baseline measurement of my current capabilities. This means that I can use this measurement to set short, medium and long-term targets that are both achievable and realistic to improve my weakness. This can also boost my motivation and determination levels as I know that improvements are within my reach as long as I try my hardest. Moreover, I can also use this baseline measurement as a comparator later in my programme when I re- collect data to see if I have improved and met my medium and long term targets. This can therefore aid my monitoring and evaluation processes.’

5 EXEMPLAR ANSWERS (2) 2) KEY: STATEMENT. LINKING WORD/PHRASE. JUSTIFICATION: EFFECT IT HAD. ‘I selected the SCAT questionnaire to collect data on my anxiety levels for many reasons. Firstly, this method is a recognised sport psychology questionnaire that has been proven to be appropriate for collecting information on anxiety in competition. As a result, this is a valid test as it actually collects data on anxiety levels in sporting competition. Thirdly, the SCAT was completed across different contexts to get data on my ability to control my anxiety in different situations. This was useful because I collected lots of data which gave a true picture of my capabilities and therefore produced reliable results. Fourthly, the SCAT was a quick and easy method to complete. This meant that I did not lose interest in it or rush my answers; instead I gave well-thought out responses which boosted the reliability of my data as my answers were accurate. Finally, the statements in the SCAT were easy to understand. This made it a valid method as I understood the statements and gave appropriate responses.’ CAN YOU ADD ANY MORE JUSTIFICATIONS? PROVIDE AN ANSWER FOR THE SECOND EMOTIONAL METHOD.

6 EXEMPLAR ANSWERS (3) 3) KEY: STATEMENT. LINKING WORD/PHRASE. JUSTIFICATION: EFFECT IT HAD. ‘One limitation of using a Model Performer is that I may choose an elite athlete who is far too advanced for my abilities. This could result in me setting unrealistic goals that are not achievable and thus losing motivation and confidence when I do not achieve them. A second limitation is that I might not have enough knowledge to understand what a Model Performer looks like in my sport. As a result, I will not understand what each sub-routine looks like and invalidate the data as I do not know if my performance is correct or not. A third limitation is that it can take a long time to collect data on a Model Performer and then analysing my performance against it. This could mean that I could get bored, not take the process seriously and put in incorrect data which outweighs the point in using a Model Performer. Finally, using a Model Performer requires access to technology such as a laptop and slow motion videos. This could mean that some schools do not have access to this equipment and can therefore not use a Model Performer.’ CAN YOU ADD ANY MORE JUSTIFICATIONS?
