1 KEY MESSAGES FROM WEC CESI REPORT JUST LAUNCHED
Renewable energy sources, in particular variable wind and solar PV have grown rapidly over the past ten years and this growth is expected to continue. RES and especially wind and solar PV have become a big business overtaking investments in conventional generating plants. Combination of technology improvements and increasing volumes are driving down CAPEX and OPEX of variable RES (VRES) Variability and average low equivalent hours of operation per year of solar PV and wind, pose challenges to their large-scale development. Project Supporter CESI S.p.A. Italy

2 RES electricity systems integration Index
Introduction 1. Current Situation of Renewables Energy Systems (RES) 2.Lessons learnt from the Case Studies 2.1. Power mix of the 32 country cases 2.2 RES regulations, policies and economics 2.3 Impacts of Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) on the electrical power system Impacts on traditional fleets Impacts on the electricity market Impacts on the Transmission and Distribution (T&D) grid Impacts on consumers 3.Measures for a smoother VRES integration 3.1 Technologies 3.2 Market redesign 4.Conclusions Annex 1-VRES CAPEX-OPEX-Results of auctions Annex 2- Snapshots of country cases

4 YEARLY AND DAILY VARIABILITY OF total WIND FLEET POWER PRODUCTION IN IRELAND
In the light of the growing importance of renewables and especially Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) all over the world, policymakers and the industry need to address emerging issues to ensure continued growth of variable renewables and their successful integration in electricity systems. Drawing on case studies from 32 countries across five continents, the report Variable Renewables Integration in Electricity Systems: How to get it right highlights lessons learnt, identifies critical success factors and extracts practical solutions for success. RENEWABLES, INCLUDING HYDROPOWER, NOW ACCOUNT FOR ABOUT 30% OF THE TOTAL GLOBAL INSTALLED POWER GENERATING CAPACITY AND 23% OF TOTAL GLOBAL ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION. In the last 10 years, wind and solar PV have witnessed an explosive average annual growth in installed capacity of 23% and 51% respectively, although their combined contribution to the global electricity production is around 4%.

5 SEASONAL AND DAILY VARIATIONS IN POWER GENERATION OF A SMALL
SOLAR PV PLANT IN CENTRAL ITALY In the light of the growing importance of renewables and especially Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) all over the world, policymakers and the industry need to address emerging issues to ensure continued growth of variable renewables and their successful integration in electricity systems. The recent decrease in solar PV and wind installations in Europe highlighted in Table 1 shows the EU’s share of global solar PV cumulative capacity falling from 75% to 43% over the last four years and wind capacity share falling from 40% down to 33%.
