5 About HRSA Health Resource and Services Administration (HRSA) is an agency of the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, this is the primary Federal agency for improving health and achieving health equity via access to quality services, a skilled health workforce HRSA’s programs provide health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically underserved

6 What it is all about Millions of Americans do not have access to health care because they live where there are not enough health professionals to meet basic needs. Shortages of health professionals suggest many more may soon find themselves unable to see a primary health care provider when they need one. HRSA health professions loan repayment, scholarship and loan programs help to encourage and enable clinicians to work in underserved areas.

12 Find Shortage Area To locate NHSC approved sites with eligible HPSA and the corresponding HPSA scores for use in the National Health Service Corps programs, you should refer to the NHSC Jobs Center. Find HPSA by states, county or street address.

13 Health Professional Shortage Areas
HPSA May be designated as having a shortage of primary medical, dental or mental health providers They may be urban or rural areas, population groups or medical or other public facilities There are currently approximately 6,100 (as of June 2014) designated Primary Care HPSAs

14 HPSA There are currently approximately 4,900 dental HPSAs
There are currently approximately 4,000 Mental Health HPSAs

15 MUAs Medically Underserved Areas (MUAs) may be a whole county or a group of contiguous counties, a group of county or civil divisions or a group of urban census tracts in which resident have a shortage of personal health services Medically Underserved Populations (MUPs) may include groups of persons who face economic, cultural or linguistic barriers to health care

17 Frequent Questions What is HPSA?
This is a geographic area, population group, or health care facility that has been designated by the Federal government as having a shortage of health care professionals. HPSA are designated using several criteria, including population to clinician ratios . The ration is usually 3,500 to 1 for primary care:5,000 to 1 for dental and 30,000 to 1 for mental health care.

18 Information re: Loan Repayment
HRSA offers two loan repayment programs for nurses working in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas. Primary care nurse practitioners, certified nurse midwives and psychiatric nurse specialists are eligible to apply to the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program. Registered nurses, including nurse practitioners are eligible to apply to the NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program.
