3. The Battery Most modern vehicles use a 12 volt system
A 12V battery will have 6 cells, each producing about 2 volts
Positive (+) and Negative (-) terminals

4. The Starter An electric motor that is controlled by the key switch
This small motor has a gear that contacts the ring gear to crank the engine over
Takes power directly from the battery, and a switch wire from the key

5. The Alternator Produces electricity for the vehicle
Maintains the charge level of the battery
Driven by a belt from the crank pulley

6. Fuse and Relay Box All of the electricity comes through here
Relays are switches that operate ‘large draw’ items
Headlights
Starter
Driving lights
Usually located under the hood, or on the firewall under the dash

7. Fuse and Relay Box pt.2 Fuses are safeguards against ‘dead shorts’
Are rated in ‘amps’, which is a measure of the amount of current the fuse will let through
The larger the number, the greater the amps
The high amp fuses will let more electricity flow

8. The Ignition Switch Turns electricity on and off for the vehicle
Made more secure by adding a key to turn the switch
Activates many other systems in addition to just stating the vehicle
