2 Starting system

PURPOSE The vehicles starting system is designed to turn or crank engine over.

4 What are some of the starting system components.

5 6 basic components 1) Battery 2) Ignition switch 3)Battery cables
4)Starter motor assembly 5)Starter safety switch 6) Flywheel assembly Manual vehicle and some automatic transmission have safety switches.

6

7 Starter Average starter motor draws about 250Amps or more.
This current flows through the large cables that connect the battery to the starter and ground.

8 Function 1) The control circuit 2) The starter circuit
The starter circuit has 2 separate circuits. 1) The control circuit 2) The starter circuit

9 The Control Circuit Connects battery power at the ignition switch to the magnetic switch which controls the high current to the starter motor.

10

11 The Starter Circuit Carriers the heavy current from the battery to the starter motor through a magnetic switch in a solenoid.

12

13 Starter Solenoid Receives a large electric current from the car battery and a small electric current from the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is turned on, a small electric current is sent to the starter solenoid. This causes the starter solenoid to close a pair of heavy contacts

14 Starter Solenoid

15 Starting Safety Switch
What is a Starting safety switch? Why do we need a starting safety switch?

16 Starting Safety Switch
Also called a park neutral safety switch for automatic transmissions. Prevents the starting system from operating when the transmission is in gear. Switch in series with circuit. Clutch start switch used on manual transmission cars. Switch is mounted on clutch pedal.

17 PNP Switch

18 Clutch Safety Switch

19 Fly Wheel Attached to the end of the crankshaft.
Large diameter, makes it easy for starter to engage and rotate engine through gear reduction

20 FlyWheel

22 What are some of the possible starting failures that may occur.
Starter failures What are some of the possible starting failures that may occur.
