c1400 owners Area Profile Population of North Glasgow = 100,000 Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation 2 out of the top 3 79% are workless households and benefit dependent 17% have literacy issues 20% have numeracy issues 38% have a major health condition 52% children live in poverty (S’burn) Area we work in Depressing reading, but not depressing area Proud Bad press? Many challenges – not unique (HA similarities?) 25% have a mental health condition 45% struggle to afford food 39% struggle to afford fuel 94% state they would have difficulty paying rent 19% have a court judgement for debt

3 Housing and Regeneration 3 strands – physical, economic & social
Look at trends – population in the area, age of people in the area. Lifestyle Changes; Work/Career and Leisure Attitudes; Education; Health and Welfare; Living Conditions; Entrepreneurial Spirit House home & Place Community Physical Regen - Housing Bread & butter core business Housing Rents etc, but wider…inc recycling Economic Regen – money in peoples pockets (social enterprise) nation's economy can be highly volatile and is often a function of a variety of factors. In a strong economy, unemployment is low and consumers enjoy increased spending power. In a struggling economy, more people are out of work and consumer confidence dwindles. As confidence decreases, less money goes back into the economy, causing businesses to become less profitable and jobs to disappear. Financial inclusion (training) – universal credit Social Regen – what is important to the PERSON Wider regen activity, sport, physical activty, recycling, older people/inter-generational, BME ng – making a house a home

5 COMMUNITY ANCHOR USING SPORT TO CHANGE LIVES
Behavioural Change (Winning Scotland Foundation) Build strong communities Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour Remove barriers to regular participation for marginalised young people Develop young people by providing them with skills for the workplace and life Education in health and well being Self explanatory – S4D Look at families and involve behavioural change Number of programmes, from pre-school to old people, volunteers to participation & performance Focus on one example that links to wider HWB agenda and involved HA staff to contribute

8 FNC Beyond sport ethos embodied by FNC – youth club providing activity for 30+ yp every Fri… Behavioral & educational for yp AND parents… Recognised by Youth Scotland & ‘funnel’ for all other activity EVIDENCE – increase confidence, increased learning & new activities, enjoy meeting friends out of school & making new ones

9 VOLUNTEERS Sustain activity – how… Me? Or local???
NOT deliverers, but ENABLERS! Local = key – stories Finish on GB – SoHK DGC focus - Through sport, young people can learn valuable life lessons & Gmindset EVIDENCE –increased confidence, learn new skills & attend training

14 How and why? Glasgow Caledonian University research findings
Providing participants with structure, routine and purpose Providing participants with a comprehensive package of support – nurturing and responsive to needs Teaching valuable life lessons, skills, attitudes through rugby Promoting positive change across behavioural & psychological domains By helping participants to work around their barriers to access a range of opportunities they previously would not have had access to

15 Recent report findings
Rugby is key to the programme The warm and supportive coaching ethos & group climate Through promoting personal development (physical activity, mental health/wellbeing, self-confidence, motivation, social bonds)

16 Quantitative findings
100% of participants reported substantial improvements in: Self-confidence Belonging to their community Motivation Ability to make positive choices Feeling able to face challenges Feeling hopeful

17 Listen to participant TRUST ME – not made up…x2 jobs, healthier, fitter etc

18 Scottish Government’s View
Scottish Government recently endorsed associations having a regeneration role in: “making significant and valuable wider contributions to their communities, for example through regeneration, community safety, supporting vulnerable people, and promoting employability skills” Response to ICI Committee from Nicola Sturgeon Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities Supported by…WHY HAs?
