1 Under the Microscope: Science Lesson Plan
Opener: As students are still in their normal seats review each station with them. Ask for questions. Pass out station packet and week 4 newspaper. Once all directions are said/read split students into groups. Stations (approx. 15 minutes each) Magnificent Magnifiers: Students read Magnificent Magnifiers section in their newspaper and find the definitions of the following words; microscopic, magnify, field of view, magnifying glass, microscope, while writing them on their station packet. Mysteries of the Microscopic World: Students are shown three pages of magnifying objects, they asked to guess what is shown in the picture. When students are done they are to ask the teacher for the answer key and check their guesses. A Microscopic World: Students are assigned to read the cover of Science Weekly: week 4 and the microscopes sections. When they are done reading they will complete the crossword on the back of the newspaper. Take a Closer Look: Students are given four bags of objects. Each students draws a picture of how the object looks by just using their eyes, then they use a hand lens and draw what they saw. There are also 2 fill in the blank questions in the station packet. Parts of a Microscope: As a group students watch a Brian Pop movie title: Microscope. When the movie is over they have to label a microscope in their station packet and unscramble the name of the different parts. Conclusion: On the back of the station packet there are extra questions for when they are done early at a station and waiting to move on. These questions are extra credit. When everyone is completed students will return to their seats and we will have a class discussion about what they found at each station. Date: October 2010 Grade: 4th GLCE(s):  S.IP.E.1 Inquiry involves generating questions, conducting investigations, and developing solutions to problems through reasoning and observation. S.IP Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the appropriate senses. S.IP Generate questions based on observations. S.IP Plan and conduct simple and fair investigations. S.IP Manipulate simple tools that aid observation and data collection S.IP Make accurate measurements with appropriate units Goals/Objectives for students: Develop an understanding of the use and purpose of a microscope. Observe and describe the differences between eye views and microscopic views. Investigate microscopic views and make predictions. Goals/Objectives for me: Explain and describe stations so students understand Manage classroom stations appropriately Materials & supplies needed: Station Packet, 5 Stations Direction Sheets, Microscopic pictures, 4 objects to view with a hand lens, week 4 of Science Weekly (under the microscope), Brain Pop: Microscope movie, answer key
