In 1960’s a Wide-Area Network connecting research and military facilities was developed
called the ARPANET
As it grew, name was changed to Internet
No centralized control center

Electronic Mail
Send and receive messages to any other Internet user
No charge, no matter the distance!
Must know the other person’s UserID on their system, and the DOMAIN name of their system
