2 Electromagnetic Waves
The speed of all electromagnetic waves is the same but they have different wavelengths and frequencies. As Wavelength decreases, the frequency increases. The shortest wavelengths have the highest frequency.

3 What is the Electromagnetic Spectrum?
Electromagnetic Waves have different Wavelengths and Frequencies Only a small portion of electromagnetic radiation is visible. This is called visible light. The rest of the waves are invisible.

4 Electromagnetic Spectrum
This is the complete range of electromagnetic waves in order of frequency.

5 Radio Waves These have the longest wavelengths and lowest frequencies.
Ex: Radio, TV

6 Microwaves These are radio waves with the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies. Ex: Microwave Oven, Cell phones, radar

7 Infrared Rays These are electromagnetic waves with shorter wavelengths. EX: Heat Lamps, Electric Stove Tops, Infrared Cameras

8 Visible Light These are the electromagnetic waves that you can see.
They make up a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum. They have shorter wavelengths and higher frequencies than infrared. The visible light waves with the longest wavelengths appear red. The shorter wavelengths appear violet. As the wavelengths decrease you see other colors of light.

9 Ultraviolet Rays These are electromagnetic waves with wavelengths that are slightly shorter than visible light. They have higher frequencies than visible light. The energy they carry is strong enough to damage or kill living cells. Small doses of ultraviolet light can be useful.

10 X-Rays These have wavelengths slightly shorter than ultraviolet.
The frequencies are slightly higher than ultra violet. They carry higher energy that can penetrate most matter. Too much exposure is harmful and can cause cancer.

11 Gamma Rays These have the shortest wavelengths and highest frequencies. They have the greatest amount of energy. Radioactive and nuclear substances can produce gamma rays. Exploding stars produce gamma rays.
