Analyze the symbols in the story. What are they and how are the vital to the overall meaning and understanding of the text? Make sure you mention the scarlet letter, though there are others as well Group Eight: Theme Analyze themes that you already can see that are prevalent in the text. How are these themes shown – use textual evidence! How can these themes be applied to other readings you have read or experiences that you have had?

NPR Article Is public ridicule still prevalent in our society?
Do you think this is a fair way to punish people for wrongs or crimes that they have committed? Why or why not? Can you think of any examples of public punishment that still exists? Is it similar or different to what Hester experiences? Read the following article: After you finish reading, write about a time that you had to formally apologize for something (hitting your brother, lying to your mom, etc.). How did it make you feel? Imagine if you had to stand in front of an audience and do that. How would you feel then?
