3 patriarch (n) Definition: the ruler, the person in charge Sentence: In the hit ABC sitcom, Blackish, Dre is the patriarch who struggles to get his family to celebrate “Daddy’s Day.” Daddy’s Day

4 matriarch (n) Definition: female head of the household, the woman in charge. Sentence: In another hit family sitcom on ABC, The Goldbergs, the children try to impress the matriarch of the family by cooking dinner, but they set her kitchen on fire instead. The Goldbergs

5 hierarchy (n) Definition: a system in which people or groups are ranked according to status or authority. Sentence: In the hierarchy of ABIS, Mr. Mags is the top dog who presides over teachers, janitors, and office staff.

6 anarchy (n) Definition: chaos, disorder in the absence of authority.
Sentence: There was pure anarchy in the classroom when Mrs. Barney went on maternity leave, and the substitute could not get the class under control.

7 speculative (adj.) Definition: based on guesses or ideas about what might happen or be true rather than on facts Sentence: When we read Dunk in seventh grade, we had to write a humorous memoir that was speculative about our future high school job.

8 perspective (n) Definition: point of view Sentence: The novel The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, is written from Ponyboy’s perspective; as we read the novel, think about how the story would be different from another character’s point of view. The Outsiders

10 specimen (n) Definition: a sample of a bodily fluid or tissue for scientific study OR an example typical of its class Sentence: At the museum of the Wild and Bizarre, we examined several strange animal specimens in jars.

11 analyze (v.) Definition: examine the details in order to explain and interpret something Sentence: We will analyze the characters and the setting in the novel Scorpions.

12 analysis (n) Definition: examination of something in order to discuss or interpret. Sentence: The analysis of the data concluded that there were no students who failed the test.
