1 MICRO-TEACHING Submitted by, Alina Noronha B.Ed. Mathematics

2 Introduction Micro teaching is an effective technique for development of teaching skills in teachers based on an effective feedback mechanism. This technique is first adopted at Stanford University, USA in 1961 by Dwight W Allen. “Micro teaching is a training technique which require of student teacher to teach a single concept using specified teaching sill to a small number of pupils in a short duration of time.” B. K. Passi , M. S. Lalitha

3 Steps in Micro-teaching
Defining the skills to be developed in terms of specific teaching behaviors Demonstration of the skill by the teacher educator by taking a lesson Based on the model, preparation of a lesson plan by the teacher trainee for a suitable topic which calls for application of he skill anticipated Teaching of the lesson by the teacher trainee in a simulated set up in the presence of observers Providing of immediate feedback Arranging re-planning, re-teaching and re-feedback sessions Repetition of plan, teach, feedback, re-plan, re-teach and re-feedback cycle till the skill is acquired.

4 Micro-teaching cycle Plan Teach Feedback Re-plan Re-teach Re-feed back

5 Phases of Micro-teaching
1.Knowledge acquisition phase Observe demo skill Analyze & discuss demo 2.Skill acquisition phase Prepare micro lesson Practice skill Feedback Re-teach 3.Transfer phase Transfer of skill to actual teaching

6 Comparison between Micro-teaching & Normal Teaching
Objectives are specified in behavioral terms Class consists of a small group of 5-7 students Teacher takes up one skill at a time Duration of time for teaching is 5-7 minutes There is immediate feedback Teaching is carried on under controlled situation Teaching is relatively simple Role of supervisor is specific & well defined Patterns of classroom interaction can be studied objectively NORMAL TEACHING Objectives are general and not specified in behavioral terms Class consists of students Teacher practices several skills at a time Duration is minutes Immediate feedback is not available There is no control over situation Teaching become complex Role of supervisor is vague Pattern of classroom interaction cannot be studied objectively

7 Advantages of micro teaching
It focuses on training for the accomplishment of specific skills. It is a real teaching It is highly individualized training device One skill is developed in one time by reducing the complexity of teaching process It provides immediate feedback to the trainee It gives guidelines for improvement in teaching Under this device, attempts are made to develop the mastery of teaching skill It enables teacher trainee to view their own performance and provides opportunities to make self criticism.

8 Limitations of micro teaching
It is skill oriented; content is not emphasized. It needs more time for training. It covers only a few specific skills. It is an expensive technique because it is not possible for all training colleges to make such arrangements, like micro-teaching laboratory, video recording etc.
