4 News Story Last Friday a court in India, was thrown into laughter as two chimpanzees were escorted into the room. The two monkeys were accused of robbing a police officer in a market.

5 News Story The police officer claimed that he was going to pay for bananas when he was distracted by a monkey pulling faces at him while another monkey robbed him of his wallet.

6 News Story After that, the monkeys threw the wallet to a man, who immediately ran away and is now at large. The monkeys were arrested and are now facing a sentence of three years in the local zoo.

8 Glossary: To accuse – to say someone did it. To be suspected of a crime – police think you did it. To be charged with a crime – police have some information and they can prove that you did it.

9 Passive PASSIVE: The two monkeys were accused of robbing a police officer. Who accused the monkeys? Why don’t we mention it? Subject: two monkeys Verb: were accused Doer: police We use Passive when the doer is not the subject of the sentence. Passive is used a lot when the subject or the doer of the action is obvious. In the news, we often know that things were done by the reporters, police, etc. ACTIVE: The police accused the two monkeys of robbing a police officer.

Active Passive The police accused the monkeys. The monkeys were accused. The monkeys threw the court into laughter. The court was thrown into laughter. The guards escorted the monkeys. The monkeys were escorted into the room. The police have not found the owner of the monkeys. The owner of the monkeys has not been found.
