1 Episode 201

2 Definition of Properties
Physical properties can be observed without chemically changing matter. Chemical properties describe how a substance interacts with other substances. Extensive properties are physical or chemical properties that depend on the amount of matter present. Intensive properties are physical or chemical properties that do not depend on the amount of matter. Episode 201

3 Examples of Properties
Physical Chemical Physical or Chemical? Extensive or intensive? Malleability Reactivity Density Combustibility Flammability Color Texture Acidity Mass Ability to rust Solubility Intensive Extensive Episode 201

4 Phases of Matter Solids Liquids Gases Plasma
Definite shape Definite volume Particles are packed together Liquids Indefinite shape Particles have room to move Gases Indefinite volume Particles are far apart Plasma High energy state where electrons are torn from the particles Are phase changes considered to be a physical or chemical change? Episode 201

5 Types of Change Physical change Chemical change
No change in the identity of the substance Chemical change One or more new substances are produced PHASE CHANGES ARE PHYSICAL CHANGES. Episode 201

6 Freezing point Melting point Boiling point Condensation point
Liquid to solid Melting point Solid to liquid freezing point = melting point Boiling point Liquid to gas Condensation point Gas to liquid Sublimation point Solid to gas Episode 201

7 Examples of Changes Physical or Chemical? Phase change Tearing Grinding Combustion Acid rain Ductility Cooking MORE? Physical Chemical Episode 201

8 Is new matter formed in physical or chemical changes?
Law of Conservation of Mass Mass cannot be created nor destroyed. Episode 201
