5. Overview
The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, when Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef at 12:04 AM
The resulting breach caused 11 to 38 million US gallons of crude oil to be spilled over the next few days.
It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters
The Valdez spill was the largest in US waters until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in terms of volume released.
Due do Prince William Sound's remote location it could only be accessed by helicopter, plane, or boat, making the response efforts difficult and severely taxed existing plans for response.

Booms – floating barriers
Dispersants - chemicals that are sprayed on a surface oil slick to break down the oil into smaller droplets that more readily mix with the water. Dispersants do not reduce the amount of oil entering the environment.

10. Lasting Effects 17 of 27 monitored species have not recovered.
researchers concluded that the high-pressure hoses used on the beaches did more harm than good. The damage to the shellfish, in turn, slowed the recovery of otters, which feed on the mollusks.
Herring schools have failed to return leading to the closure of the herring fishery that accounted for half of Cordova’s income.
