1 BIO 105 – Environmental Science Case Study Presentation
Case Study and Briefing Instructions Grading Sample Presentation

2 Instructions Step 1- Research and select a famous environmental case/issue (Exxon Valdez) Step 2- Provide subject to instructor NLT Class 6. Step 3- Prepare minute PowerPoint presentation to be ready NLT 2/25/16. Include the following subjects (25 slides or less): Overview Key Stakeholders (who was responsible) Environmental Impacts (what was affected) Solutions Potential (current) or occurring (past) long term effects Work Cited Step 4- Respond to peer and instructor questions.

3 Grading Briefing is worth 11% (45 points) of your overall course grade
Grading criteria includes: Groups understood the work presented points The main issue is clearly presented points Follows clearly chain of thought points Sections clearly stated and supported points Effective use of diagrams, charts, and graphs- 5 points Work Cited page points Briefing stayed within the 25 minute timeframe 5 points_ points

4 The Exxon Valdez Presentation by: John Smith

5 Overview The Exxon Valdez oil spill occurred in Prince William Sound, Alaska, on March 24, 1989, when Exxon Valdez, an oil tanker bound for Long Beach, California, struck Prince William Sound's Bligh Reef at 12:04 AM The resulting breach caused 11 to 38 million US gallons of crude oil to be spilled over the next few days. It is considered to be one of the most devastating human-caused environmental disasters The Valdez spill was the largest in US waters until the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in terms of volume released. Due do Prince William Sound's remote location it could only be accessed by helicopter, plane, or boat, making the response efforts difficult and severely taxed existing plans for response.

6 Overview: Where did the Oil Go?

7 Key Stake Holders Exxon Oil Company Alyeska Pipeline Service Company
Alaskin Fishing Industry

8 Environmental Impacts
Death Toll 2000 sea otters 302 harbor seals 250,000 birds 250 bald eagles 22 killer whales Thousands of fish Shoreline pollution

9 Solutions Local environments were identified and ranked according to the degree of cleanup needed and given a priority for action Clean methods included Controlled Burns Mechanical & Chemical means : Permanent Storage containers Skimmers – Boats the remove oil from the surface Booms – floating barriers Dispersants - chemicals that are sprayed on a surface oil slick to break down the oil into smaller droplets that more readily mix with the water. Dispersants do not reduce the amount of oil entering the environment.

10 Lasting Effects 17 of 27 monitored species have not recovered.
researchers concluded that the high-pressure hoses used on the beaches did more harm than good. The damage to the shellfish, in turn, slowed the recovery of otters, which feed on the mollusks. Herring schools have failed to return leading to the closure of the herring fishery that accounted for half of Cordova’s income. Bioaccumulation of chemicals up the food chain Killer whales (resident pod is thought to have no chance for recovery)
