High School

2 S8P1. b. Develop and use models to describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasma states when thermal energy is added or removed. S8P2. d.Plan and carry out investigations on the effects of heat transfer on molecular motion as itrelates to the collision of atoms (conduction), through space (radiation), or in currents in a liquid or a gas (convection)

3 Problem You work on an ice cream cart at the Braves stadium, and you’ve had customers complain that the ice cream is too soft and melts too quickly after they purchase it. If sales continue to fall because of this problem, YOU WILL BE FIRED!! Currently the carts use H20 (water) ice to keep the ice cream cold. You need to come up with an alternative solution to H2O ice. Your supervisor has suggested dry ice would be better, but needs you to scientifically prove it is better. You need to investigate if we can make our own dry ice, as it is too expensive to purchase

4 Solution Create a business proposal for the CTO (Chief Thrill Officer) that : Proves that dry ice is better that water ice Depicts phase changes from a particle perspective Shows phase change graphs comparing dry ice to water ice Explains heat transfer from particle perspective Calculates the heat capacity of the dry ice Describes how dry ice is made as it relates to the gas laws

5 PROCESS You will study: Matter phases from particle perspective
Gas laws Heat transfer Heat capacity
