Presented by: Mrs. Eskridge

Heat:  Rumford concluded that heat must be a form of energy.  Joule investigated the relationship between heat and motion.  The amount of heat produced depends on the amount of motion.

Molecules in Motion:  What are some examples that demonstrate that motion produces heat?  Rubbing your hands together to keep warm

Molecules in Motion: Scientists knew that:  Energy is needed (to set an object in motion)…  Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules, which are always in motion…  Concluded that:  HEAT is a form of energy and that it is related to the motion of molecules.

Heat Transfer:  The movement of heat from a warmer object to a cooler one.

Heat Transfer:  There are 3 methods of heat transfer:  Conduction  Convection  Radiation

Conduction:  Conduction = heat is transferred through a substance, or from one substance to another, by direct contact of molecules.  Conduction takes place best in solids

Conduction:

Convection:  Heat energy is transferred through liquids and gases by means of up and down movements called = Convection Currents.

Radiation:  Heat energy is transferred through empty space by Radiation.

3 methods of heat transfer:

The End
