1 Volume and Capacity By Teacher Angelo

2 Volume – is the amount of space occupied by an object.
aquarium box Volume – is the amount of space occupied by an object.

3 bottle cups jug pitcher

4 mugs Capacity - is the amount of objects or substances that a container can hold to its maximum.

5 Dimensions of cube Length = Width = Height
*A cube has 6 equal and square faces.

6 Dimensions of cuboid *A cuboid has six rectangular faces.

7 Example 1: Find the dimensions
of the cuboid. Answer: Length = 16 cm Width = 9 cm Height = 4 cm

8 Example 2: Find the dimensions
of the cuboid. Answer: Length = _________ Width = _________ Height = _________ 3 cm 3 cm 4 cm

9 Special Seatwork (5 points)
Find the dimensions of the cuboid. Answer: Length = _________ Width = _________ Height = _________ 9 in 5 in 3 in

10 Volume of Cube = lwh = s3 = (s)(s)(s) Volume = lwh = (1 u)(1 u)(1 u)
Volume = (length)(width)(height) = lwh = s3 = (s)(s)(s) Volume = lwh = (1 u)(1 u)(1 u) = 1 u3 = 1 cubic unit

11 Example 1 Find the volume of the cube. Working: V = s3 = (5 cm)3 = (5 cm)(5 cm)(5 cm) V = 125 cm3

12 Example 2 2cm Working Volume = lwh V = (2cm)(2cm)(2cm) V = 8 cm³
Calculate the volume of the dice.

13 Special Seatwork (5 points)
Find the volume of the cube.

14 Volume of a cuboid 18 cubes fit the base. = 1 cubic centimeter = 1 cm³
4 layers of 18 cubes = 4 x 18 = 72 centimetre cubes = 72 cm³

15 Volume of Cuboid Volume = (length)(width)(height) = lwh

16 V = lwh = (4 cm)(3cm)(2 cm) V = 24 cm³ Example 1
Find the volume of the cube. V = lwh = (4 cm)(3cm)(2 cm) V = 24 cm³

17 Find the volume of the building.
Example 2 Find the volume of the building. Building Roi-Et Plaza Working 27cm Volume = lwh V = (18cm)(5cm)(27cm) V = 2,430 cm³ 5 cm 18 cm

23 Workbook Exercise A Number 1 and 2 Page 101 to 102

24 Workbook Exercise B Letter A, B, C and D Page 103 to 106

25 Converting metric units of volume and capacity
Metric units of volume/capacity 1 liter = 1,000 cubic centimeters(cm3) 1,000 cubic milliliters(mL) 1 milliliter 1 cubic centimeters(cm3 or cc) 1 cubic meter 1,000 liters(L) 1,000,000 cubic centimeters(cm3)

26 Converting larger units to smaller units
Example 1 Convert 3 L to cubic centimeters. Working: 1 L = 1,000 cm3 3 L = (3 L) 1,000 cm3 1 L = (3)(1,000 cm3) = 3,000 cm3

27 Example 2 Convert 9 m3 to cubic centimeters. Working: 1 m3 = 1,000,000 cm3 9 m3 = (9 m3) 1,000,000 cm3 1 m3 = (9)(1,000,000 cm3) = 9,000,000 cm3

28 Example 2 Convert 2 L to milliliters. Working: 1 L = 1,000 mL 2 L = (2 L) 1,000 mL 1 L = (9)(1,000,000 cm3) = 9,000,000 cm3

29 Converting smaller units to larger units
Example 1 Convert 5,000 m3 to liters. Working: 1 m3 = 1,000 L 5,000 m3 = (5,000 m3) ,000 L 1 m3 = (5,000)(1,000 L) = 5,000,000 L

30 Convert 2,000,000 cm3 to cubic meters.
Example 2 Convert 2,000,000 cm3 to cubic meters. Working: 1,000,000 cm3 = 1 m3 2,000,000 cm3 = (2,000,000 cm3) m3 1,000,000 cm3 = (2)(1 m3) = 2 m3

31 Example 3 Convert 10,000 mL to liters. Working: = (10)(1 L) = 10 L
1,000 mL = 1 L 10,000 mL = (10,000 mL ) L 1,000 mL = (10)(1 L) = 10 L
