2 Antithesis - a figure of speech in which an opposition or contrast of ideas is expressed by parallelism of words that are the opposites of, or strongly contrasted with, each other, such as “hatred stirs up strife, but love covers all sins”. Elegy - a poem of serious reflection, typically a lament for the dead. Turn/shift – Sometimes referred to as a volta, A shift in tone or argument that occurs within a poem

3 Annotating “The Seafarer”
While you read, look for examples of: Personification, metaphor, kennings, epithets, alliteration, assonance, consonance, antithesis Especially consider the sound effects created by examples of alliteration, assonance, and consonance Identify the turn or the shift in the poem How would you describe the overall tone? Remember, annotating is more than just highlighting make notes, ask questions, look up unfamiliar words, etc.
