2 Civil Rights in the 50s Main Idea:
Although the 1950s were a time of stability and conformity, there were many important developments in the civil rights movement that led to the movement in the 1960s.

3 Important Terms NAACP: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People Thurgood Marshall: an influential NAACP lawyer who fought for equal rights through the courts. 14th Amendment: Guarantees equal protection under the law

4 Dred Scott v. Stanford Year: 1857 Situation: Decision:
Dred Scott was a slave who, after his master died and moving to a Northern state, sued for his freedom. Decision: Dred Scott did not have his freedom or citizenship rights. They further ruled that no African Americans are not citizens, but property.

5 Plessy v. Ferguson Year: 1896 Situation: Decision:
Homer Plessy refused to sit in a Jim Crow car, breaking a Louisiana law. Decision: Upheld the constitutionality of segregation under the “separate but equal” doctrine. Led to rampant segregation across the country especially in the South.

7 Brown v. Board of Education
Year: 1954 Situation: Multiple families sued to attend white schools that were closer or safer to travel to. Decision: Overturned Plessy “Separate but equal” is unconstitutional Led to forced integration that many states were not ready for

8 Little Rock Nine In 1957, the governor of Arkansas declared that he would not enforce integration. 9 African American teenagers were enrolled and tried to attend a previously all-white school. Angry mobs kept them from entering, so Eisenhower was forced to send the military to enforce the law. Students had to be escorted to school by armed guards
