2. The aim : At the end of the lessons, the sts will be able to:
know about the definitions or functions or purposes of different types of ships;
grasp some terms relating to ship types;
learn one of the reading skills – skim reading

3. Teaching procedures Introduce the aim of these two lessons.
Lead-in by brainstorming: how many ship types are there nowadays?
Give a brief introduction to some commonly seen ships
Ask the sts to skim the text and tell the ship types.
Group work: divide the class into 8 groups, each group is assigned to one or two ship types, and they have to outline the main ideas, and be prepared to give a presentation.

4. Teaching procedures: Group presentation. Summarise the lessons.
Assign after-class tasks: 1) to complete the task on p8. 2) Read the supplementary materials.

6. This is a tanker, which carries oil in huge tanks.

7. This is a passenger car ferry, which carries passengers as well as cars and buses.

8. This is a ro-ro ferry, which carries passengers, cars, buses, and lorries

9. This is a bulk carrier, which carries cargoes such as iron ore, coal, grain that is loaded in bulk, not in containers.

10. This is a container ship, which carries standard-sized containers in the cargo hold and as deck cargo.

11. This is a gas tanker, which carries gas under high pressure in liquid form.
