ROOFING MATERIALS, INSULATION, AND HOUSING SYSTEMS

2 1. Roofing Materials: provide a watertight protective layer for the house

3 2. Roof Shingles A covering to protect the roof and ultimately the entire house

4 3. Asphalt Shingles Most common type used Thin; made of asphalt.

5 4-5. Wood Shingles (Shakes)
Thick Must be treated with fire retardant and decay- resistant chemicals Expensive.

6 6-7. Slate and Tile Often used in warmer climates
Very heavy; requires stronger roof support Very durable Very expensive.

7 8. Metal Aluminum, tin- plated steel or copper Mid-priced.

9 9-10. Insulation Keeps heat indoors in winter and outdoors in summer – means lower heating and cooling bills Rated by it’s R-value. The greater the R- value the better it insulates (ex. R-38 is better than R-22) Should be thickest over the ceiling.

10 11. Blanket (Batt) Insulation
Comes in rolls that are used in Attics Floors Walls Around pipes and ducts.

11 12. Board Insulation Made from rigid, foamed plastics Used
around foundation walls on the outside of studs.

12 13. Loose-fill Insulation
Usually fiber glass blown in spaces that are difficult to reach such as Attics Inside walls In concrete blocks.

13 Foam Insulation A spray foam that can be used in any space
Conforms to the shape where it is used Expands when sprayed.

14 14. Electrical Systems The PANEL BOX:
receives power from the electric company divides the power into individual circuits.

15 15. Circuit breakers protect circuits from too much power.

16 16. Ground fault circuit interrupters
Electricity runs to outlets or receptacles Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI outlets) help reduce the risk of electric shock in areas close to water.

17 Heating and Cooling Systems

18 17. Forced Air System: air heated by a furnace and travels through ducts to rooms

19 18. Radiant Heat: uses tubing in ceiling, floors, or baseboards to “radiate” heat.

20 19-20. Heat Pump: heats or cools the house as needed
Heat Pump: heats or cools the house as needed. Most efficient in areas with mild to moderate winter climates.

21 Plumbing systems provide water and remove waterborne waste.

22 21-22. Pipes are located in the floor, walls, and/or ceiling
Shut off valves stop water to separate parts of the system.

23 Plastic Pipes Used instead of lead pipes Light weight and inexpensive.
