What is Metacognition? According to theory, there are two complementary processes to metacognition: Knowledge of cognition involves recognising the factors that influence one’s own performance Regulation of cognition involves setting goals and planning, monitoring and controlling learning and evaluating one’s own learning (Hacker, 2009)

Flavell John Flavell is said to be the “father of the field” He defines metacognition as embracing both knowledge and skills: “The individual’s own awareness and consideration of his or her cognitive process and strategies” Skills include the ability to monitor and regulate strategies for learning, including planning, prioritising and monitoring, strategies which require personal involvement. (Flavell, 1976:232).
