We encourage “Water on Desks” where each child may bring a clear plastic bottle with pull up top. Please ensure that the bottle is named and contains water NOT squash or juice. Lunchtime - Children are able to bring their own packed lunch or have a cooked meal or buffet from the canteen. Please send money in a clearly labelled purse on a daily basis, as we have a till system in place (£1.80 per day).

All classes work together and cover the same learning throughout the year.

Reading Shared reading ~ Teacher reads a shared text with class modelling fluency and expression. Guided reading ~ A group of children reading from the same text supported by the teacher/ helper. Individual reading ~ An individual child reading to a teacher/ helper/ buddy etc. (Home Reading) Child practises fluency and expression. Adult questions the child about characters, plot, setting, predictions etc.* Children will be allocated a changing day when they are to bring their home reading book and reading record into school. At home, comments will be recorded by an adult in their reading record along with a signature. The class teacher will exchange the home reading book on their allocated changing day.

Writing All children will begin the year by writing in pencil. They will earn the right to use a ‘handwriting’ pen by demonstrating to their class teacher that they have a fluent, legible style with a pencil first. If this is consistent then their pencil will be exchanged for an ink based pen.

Maths We use the ‘Abacus’ Maths scheme but also do a lot of teaching alongside this to implement the topics. The children learn through lots of practical activities. A range of mathematical strategies and language is used every day, but is not always recorded formally. Individual ‘wipe boards’ are an integral part of teaching and learning along with other interactive resources. *
