Query Pagelets and XSL Goal: Display detailed student data in an intuitive and transparent way Advantages: High level of flexibility, only limited by PS Query and XSL abilities.

Fluid UI Responsive User Interface

What is Fluid UI PeopleSoft Fluid User Interface moves away from pixel-perfect page layout and provides greater flexibility with the enhanced use of cascading style sheets (CSS3), HTML5, and JavaScript. Responsive refers to the ability for the page to automatically adjust to the screen size of the browser viewing the page and adjusting accordingly Designed as a significant improvement over the PeopleSoft “classic” user interface, the PeopleSoft Fluid User Interface moves away from pixel-perfect page layout and provides greater flexibility with the enhanced use of cascading style sheets (CSS3), HTML5, and JavaScript. PeopleSoft application fluid pages scale gracefully from large screen devices, such as laptops and desktops, to the reduced viewing space of tablets and smartphones. Many commercial websites use a similar design model whereby the presentation and layout of information is adjusted dynamically to conform to the dimensions of the user’s device. The Fluid User Interface design approach gives developers just this type of control over the user experience. When a larger screen size (a screen with more “real estate”) is detected, the application content will adjust and conform accordingly to fill the space effectively. Similarly, if a smaller screen size is detected, non-essential information can be removed and the presentation of content will adjust to flow in a usable way. Like PeopleSoft “classic” pages, fluid page definitions are maintained within PeopleSoft Application Designer, and the application developer will have the ability to define and apply conditional formatting appropriate to smartphone, tablet, or large-screen devices. At runtime, PeopleTools will apply the corresponding formatting according to the device in use. An end user can interact with fluid pages using a conventional mouse and keyboard or using a touch interface, which is common on tablets and smartphones. These new pages are device-independent and will operate on any certified device browser.

My Classes This landing page shows the student their courses enrolled for the term, access to class search and features later discussed in this presentation

Class Search Students can search on class titles, Instructors, and subject and catalog numbers Using the refined search they are able to filter on courses by careers, attributes and days of the week

Public Class Search Live Demo

Pre-Registration During Week 8 of Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, students who are eligible for Pre- Registration may select and rank courses for the following quarter via the my.UChicago.edu site. Classes should be ranked from most desired to least desired (a ranking of “1” indicates most desired). Students interested in multiple sections of a course may select and rank multiple sections of interest.  During Week 10, Pre-Registration requests are “resolved” and registrations are added to students’ schedules. Pre-Registration for the following quarter occurs in eighth week of Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters. To be eligible to take part in Pre-Registration, students must be free of any administrative or academic holds. Students planning to graduate in the current quarter, students who have scheduled a leave of absence, and students who will be abroad for the next quarter cannot participate in Pre-Registration. This process is only available for degree-seeking students in the College. See the College's website for details. Students at large (SAL), international visitor, and Graham School students may not participate in Pre-Registration. Through Pre-Registration, courses are ranked in order of preference. Students are allowed to select and rank (1=most desired, 10=least) up to ten courses. During tenth week, students are "resolved" into classes. Students are automatically enrolled into certain sequenced courses; usually general education and language courses that continue to meet at the same time. Depending on the quarter, students may drop out of certain auto-enrolled courses before selecting and ranking other courses. Pre-Registration is available 24 hours a day, between 9:00 AM on Monday of eighth week and 5:00 PM on Friday of eighth week. During this period, students may update courses and rankings as often as they choose. The date, time of day, and order in which students log into the system are irreleveant to the outcome. Pre-Registration & Resolution Courses that are not auto-enrolled may be added to one’s schedule during Pre-Registration. During Week 8 of Autumn, Winter, and Spring quarters, students who are eligible for Pre-Registration may select and rank courses for the following quarter via the my.UChicago.edu site. Classes should be ranked from most desired to least desired (a ranking of “1” indicates most desired). Students interested in multiple sections of a course may select and rank multiple sections of interest.  During Week 10, Pre-Registration requests are “resolved” and registrations are added to students’ schedules. The Pre-Registration process does not guarantee enrollment in any course, and students should discuss their registration plans with their College Adviser. To be eligible to take part in Pre-Registration, students must have satisfied any mandatory advising requirements and be free of any administrative or academic holds. First-year students are required to meet with their College Adviser in every quarter; second-year students are required to meet in the spring quarter only, third-year students in the winter quarter, and fourth-year students in the autumn quarter. To be eligible for Pre-Registration, students must attend their adviser meeting before the end of Week 7. Students planning to graduate in the current quarter, students who have scheduled a leave of absence, and students who will be abroad for the next quarter cannot participate in Pre-Registration. This process is only available for degree-seeking student. Students at large (SAL), international visitors, and Graham School students may not participate in Pre-Registration.

Pre-Registration Students can add classes to their pre- registration tab and further rank the courses during the week We used a combination of a query to define eligible students, enrollment appointments and term calendar date to control which week defined the Pre-Registration time period.

Pre-Registration Using the class search textbox, the page will display the courses that are eligible to add to pre- registration using class attributes to define them Only classes with a Pre-Reg class attribute will display the PRE-REG button that allows students to add courses to their Pre-Registration tab. Once students are done using the pre-registration window, the courses are locked from them in order to run the resolution report and then indicate what their results are

Pre-Registration After pre- registration is completed, the students can see the status of all the classes they ranked to determine how they were resolved These messages came from the message catalog and can be modified if needed. Also notice at this point the ranks are not in edit mode because the pre-reg window has closed Our process of resolution was a bolt on created to prioritize students by academic level, majors, priority granted to the course and also a random number to break ties in case students had the same priority factors.

Add/Drop Two phases: Online add, drop, swap through end of first week Online drop only through end of third week, with add & swap permitted via instructor consent. Access controlled by leveraging the Enroll, Enroll w/Permission, and Drop time periods Minimal clicks to complete Add

Add/Drop My Classes landing page displays courses enrolled via pre- registration. Students can drop or swap an enrolled course, or search for a new course to add.

Add/Drop Clicking on the course displays the same detailed information available in the search

Add/Drop Search for classes using subject code and catalog number (e.g. ENGL ), keyword, or instructor name. Initiate or refine search using the filters on the left.

Add/Drop Clicking on the class displays additional information about the course Action buttons appear so that students can take action from this page, or click the Return button to take action from the previous page

Online Consent When students are not eligible to register for a class, we have allowed students to request consent into that course and then track if the faculty and/or department has granted that consent. Under the Planned Courses tab, students will be able to see what courses they have requested consent for, the results of that consent and then the ability to enroll into those courses once the consent has been granted.

Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned Be Flexible Communicate Keep Things in Perspective
Build a flexible infrastructure using tools that allow for quick adaptation. Leverage configuration where possible. Be prepared to swallow your pride and change direction if one of your pet projects isn’t working how you intended. Communicate Don’t assume that just because a piece of functionality is a significant step forward, it will be embraced. By interacting with your users, separate essentials for a particular business process from nice-to-haves and nostalgia. Keep Things in Perspective Recognize your accomplishments even while acknowledging challenges Accept criticism and adapt, but remember that the ‘Facebook News Feed’ effect is very real.
