5 Description and Instructions
Mural Judge: Our students have worked hard creating their art murals for this Challenge. As a Mural Judge you will help score each team to help us select the 2014 winners. The Problem to Solve: Due to population increases and economic growth, the demand for clean water and energy has skyrocketed, leading to clean water and energy shortages. In order to mitigate the effect of these shortages and sustain the quality of life on a global scale, we need to find innovative ways to access, conserve, and efficiently utilize clean water and energy resources. The Mural Challenge: Students will create an art masterpiece that illustrate the impact that solutions to the clean water and energy shortages will have on the world as depicted on the turtle’s back. The mural must have a 2 inch border surrounding the artwork. The required dimensions for elementary school is 34 inches x 71 inches, middle school is 68 inches x 71 inches, and high school is 68 inches x 107 inches. The design must be influenced by geometry and draw inspiration from the original works, “Turtle Tree Mandala” and “First Dawn,” created by artist Marcia Snedecor and include three CSTEM Characters: Slippery, Sprout, and Squirt. Each schools mural must be accompanied by a one page typed short story (12 font size and double spaced) of their masterpiece. Elementary Schools will create a mural masterpiece, using pastels, pertaining to clean water and energy access. Middle Schools will create a mural masterpiece, using acrylics, pertaining to conservation of clean water and energy resources. High Schools will create a mural masterpiece, using mixed media, pertaining to efficient use of clean water and energy resources.
