3 Purpose: We will learn how to to incorporate poetry into the classroom through the “I Am” poem, and cast a student’s face. The cast of the child’s face and their words in poetry are a tribute to parents and family signifying how culture and family has shaped them. School leaders/Educators, should recognize students : All students bring cultural value to school. Students do not arrive to school with an empty slate; they bring cultural value with them. Listen to student voices, listen to their stories and celebrate them. Cultural memories and the cultural value of a majority of today’s students must be acknowledged and celebrated today and in the future.

9 “I Am” Poem Format STANZA 3 I understand (something you know is true)
I am (two special characteristics about you) I wonder (something you are curious about) I hear (something a person (past, present) would say about you I see (an imaginary or actual sight) I want (a desire) I am (the first line of the poem is repeated) STANZA 3 I understand (something you know is true) I say (something you believe in) I dream (something you could actually dream about) I try (something you could make an effort to do) I am (repeat first line) STANZA 2 I pretend (something the person or thing could actually pretend to do) I feel (a feeling about the imaginary) I touch (an imaginary touch) I worry (something that really bothers you) I cry (something that could make you sad) I am (repeat first line of poem) STANZA 4 I am afraid (something that you fear) I am grateful (something you’re grateful about) I love (something that you love) I admire (something/someone you admire about your parents or family) I am (repeat first Line)
