We will learn how to to incorporate poetry into the classroom through the “I Am” poem, and cast a student’s face.
The cast of the child’s face and their words in poetry are a tribute to parents and family signifying how culture and family has shaped them.

Students do not arrive to school with an empty slate; they bring cultural value with them.
Listen to student voices, listen to their stories and celebrate them.
Cultural memories and the cultural value of a majority of today’s students must be acknowledged and celebrated today and in the future.

I hear (something a person (past, present) would say about you
I see (an imaginary or actual sight)
I want (a desire)
I am (the first line of the poem is repeated)

I try (something you could make an effort to do)
