As there are divisions in many religions, so it is within the Islamic Faith
Two major groups are the Sunnis and Shias
About 90% of Muslims are Sunnis

6. So What’s The Difference?
Sunnis follow the Sunnah, or custom of Muhammad
Shias are Muslims who follow Ali, Muhammad’s closest relative

7. How They Disagree
Ali was Muhammad’s cousin and was married to his daughter. After Muhammad died, Muslims split over who would succeed Muhammad as leader of Islam
The Sunnis wanted the community to choose the best leader to succeed Muhammad
The Shia favored Ali, feeling that leadership should stay within the prophets family

Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey have standard of living/literacy rates that range from a low 63% in Saudi Arabia to a high 87% in Turkey
Israel has the highest literacy rate in the Middle East at 97%
The Gaza strip has a literacy rate of 92%
War in Iraq over the past two decades have hurt both education and the economy. They have a literacy rate of about 74%

13. Literacy Rate/Standard of Living in Different Countries
Afghanistan has been in political turmoil since the mid 1970s due to the Taliban, a violent political group, being in power
Since invading in 2003, the United States has expanded education in this country, but still the overall literacy rate is only 28%, with a standard of living of roughly $800 per person per year.
