1 6.2 The War Continues

2 What battle was a major turning point for the war?
6.1 Refresher What battle was a major turning point for the war?

3 Ben Franklin in Paris—Why??

4 1777- Big year for the patriots
Ben Franklin is in France trying to convince them to help out the Revolution cause. What would Franklin be asking for????

5 Franklin is asking for men, money, and supplies.
France in 1777 only gives them secret money. Why would France not go to war??? If England is the most powerful country in the world why would France be backing their enemies?

6 Jonathan Austin of Boston personally delivers news to Franklin in France that the Patriots have won the Battle of Saratoga. What are some issues with this? Franklin wants to know about Philly. What does Philadelphia signify?

7 Would you only give money to a cause if you knew it would win???
Question: Would you only give money to a cause if you knew it would win???

8 1778- HUGE year for the Patriots
France finally declares war on England. They send troops, money, and supplies to America. What is the ONE problem with this????

9 Success continues After France declares war, Spain decides to also help out the American cause. In 1779 Spain declares war on England. Why do you think that both France AND Spain declared war on England? Spain fights off the British in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. How would this impact the war???

10 Valley forge If you were stuck in the freezing cold without decent food, shelter, medicine, or clothes would you abandon your duty?

11 Which side would you rather be on?
Valley forge cont. British General Howe is in Philadelphia while Washington and the Continental Army are camped out along the Delaware River. Which side would you rather be on?

12 Rough Riders Men in the Continental Army especially generals deserted their posts. Many men died from lack of sufficient resources. Others just went AWOL. However, among the majority morale was strong with Washington as their leader especially in Why??? Spirit > Numbers

13 Happy times? 1778 Washington tells his troops about France’s alliance and it is a major morale booster so much so that they throw a parade. Problems: Less Money Mo’ Problems. While Spain and France did lend the Patriots money they still needed tons of it. What can the Continental Congress NOT do?

14 The Continental Congress can not tax the colonists so how does one get money to support a war?
States and the Congress JUST PRINT Money! Printing money that you cannot back by gold or silver is called inflation. Inflation makes money worthless Can anyone think of another time when there was major inflation?

15 Important People Marquis de Layfayette- immigrated from France to fight in the Revolutionary War. “American cause represented the future of humankind” Friedrich von Steiben- Prussian officer whips the Continental Army into shape. Juan de Miralles- Persuaded Spain, Cuba, and Mexico to send money

16 Random Women took over the men’s role during the war.
Abigail Adams (John Adams wife) wanted women to have equal rights as men since they assumed their role when they were off fighting. The question over slavery arises 2/3rds of Pennsylvania Patriots were foreign born. What does that statistic maybe say about not only Pennsylvania but who is actually fighting in the war??
