1 Identifying parts of an experiment

2 Carol Carol thinks that boiled water will freeze faster than cold water. She boils a cup of tap water and pours it into a small bowl. She puts that bowl in the freezer. She fills a small bowl with cold tap water. She puts that bowl in the freezer. Carol uses a timer to check on the water every thirty minutes. She records the temperature of each bowl using a table.

3 Parts of Carol’s Experiment
Hypothesis: Boiling water will freeze faster than cold water. Independent Variable: Hot water Dependent Variable: How quickly the water reaches 32*F (freezing) Constants: Type of bowl, time entering freezer, water Control: Cold water

4 Patrick Patrick thinks his dog, Moon, will have less trouble with arthritis if he takes DoggyDo Vitamins. Patrick continues feeding Moon his regular dog food, and he tries to keep their amount of activity the same. The first month, Moon gets no vitamins. The second month, Moon gets the normal dosage. Patrick monitors Moon’s speed on their daily walks in the park and records it in a table.

5 Parts of Patrick’s Experiment
Hypothesis: DoggyDo vitamins will help Moon feel better. Independent Variable: DoggyDo Vitamins Dependent Variable: Speed of Moon’s walk Constants: Type of food, level of activity Control: A month with no vitamins

6 George George thinks teachers will call on him more if he wears red shirts. He alternates daily wearing red shirts and blue shirts for three months, recording how often each teacher calls on him every day. He raises his hand four times per class period to contribute to discussion.

7 Parts of George’s Experiment
Hypothesis: Teachers will call on a student in a red shirt more often than any other color. Independent Variable: Red shirt Dependent Variable: Number of times called on Constants: Number of times hand is raised, contributing good content each time Control: Blue shirt

8 Design an Experiment to Test the Following Scenarios
Jennifer thinks eating potato chips causes her skin to break out. Jerris believes his lucky socks, which he of course would never put in the washer since that would remove their luck, are what help the local team win games. Tonya thinks taking the main highway home is slower than taking the back roads home.

9 Pick three. Compose an experiment.
Frank says he can balance on one foot longer than he can balance on his hands. Reese thinks cold water boils faster than hot water. Ms. Maynard thinks that students who study at least one hour for a test will pass it with a 70% or higher. Drew thinks that his Dog will like pedigree dog food better than old roy. Jordan thinks that if he sits in the back row, the teacher will never call on him. Michelle thinks that students that went to Washington Middle School are smarter than students that went to Jefferson Middle School. Adam thinks that students that went to Washington Middle School cause more classroom disruption than students that went to Jefferson.
