4 Classroom Goal I want to create a positive, hands-on learning environment. I’d like to promote independent learners and academic growth. Students will improve organizational skills, social skills, and study habits. I’ll instill the ‘love of learning’ in my students.

How can you help your child become a better reader? The different components in Treasures are: Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Skills Decodable Stories Comprehension Skills Spelling and Vocabulary Student Anthologies/Wonders (Fiction, Non-Fiction Selections) Writing Small Group Instruction Science and Social Studies Integration Reading Strategies: Making Connections, Predicting, Monitoring and Clarifying, Monitoring and Adjusting Reading Speed, and Asking Questions- Daily 5: Is a series of literacy tasks which students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups or confers with individuals. Promotes independent workers: Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Writing, and Word Work

11 What is Math Expressions?
Math Expressions is a comprehensive Kindergarten – Grade 5 mathematics curriculum that offers new ways to teach and learn mathematics. It combines the most powerful elements of standards-based instruction with the best of traditional approaches. Math Expressions uses objects, drawings, conceptual language, and real-world situations to help students build mathematical ideals that make sense to them.

12 Components of Math Expressions
Quick Practice: 5-min activity intended on activating prior-knowledge at the beginning of the lesson Drawn Models: Moves students from physical manipulatives (concrete) to conceptual drawings (abstract) which helps children explain their thinking and helps teachers gain insight to students’ understanding Language Development: Students are encouraged to write their own problems and describe their problem-solving strategies in writing through journal prompts Student Leaders: Encourages participation & helps with children gain independence Math Talk: As children communicate about math, they gain insights into their thinking and others. They reflect on their learning and organize and consolidate their thinking about math.

13 Other Classes: Science and Social Studies Library: Mondays 1:45-2:15
Students may check out 2 books per week Books due Fridays Computers: On Wednesdays Ms. Comendant will teach computers in the computer lab. Our P.E. Days will be on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, spelling Unit Writing Assessments Writing Tests assessed each unit: narrative, expository, and opinion Math Assessments Quizzed periodically and unit tests *Formative assessments will be administered in all subjects.

15 Homework Policy 10-30 minutes of homework daily (plus reading)
Homework will include: Reading Log with writing response: passed out on Mondays, due on Fridays Math/Language Arts: Assigned daily, due on Fridays (math homework workbook will be left at home). Students are responsible for writing these assignments down each day on their recording sheet. Additional project-based activities will periodically be assigned Most work students can complete independently Designed for average child- can be modified Check over your child’s work each night
