Examples: Presidents, Kings or Queens, explorers, scientists, artists, inventors, composers Usually not celebrities Places - Examples: rivers, lakes, mountains, cities, states, countries, continents Things - all other topics Examples: animals, dinosaurs, drawing, events, government, history, holidays, money, planets, plants, rocks, sports, science

Set of books in alphabetical order Each book in the set is called a volume Topics within each volume are in alphabetical order Guide words are at the top of each page Index volume - alphabetical list of all topics in the encyclopedia and what volume & pages

6 Locating Information inside a volume
You go to the volume containing the letter of the alphabet that your topic begins with. Example: If you want to find out about Mexico, you could go to the M volume, and then using the guide words at the top of the page find the article on Mexico

7 Web Based Encyclopedias
Free versions: Wikipedia is an web-based encyclopedia. Be sure to check your information against another reliable source

8 HELPFUL HINTS If a subject has 2 parts, look up under the first part
North America would be under N for North Pacific Ocean would be under P for Pacific Look up a person under their last name George Washington would be found under Washington King George would be found under George

9 which volume you would find information on: 
Fish North America Wind Birds Massachusetts Ships

10 Directions: choose a volume of an encyclopedia located on the table. Browse through the volume and locate examples of : a famous person, a place and a thing List What you found on the sheet provided. What were the guide words on the page? Pick one of the topics and find 2 or 3 interesting facts to share with the class.

11 Air Drop When you finish save the file as your first and last name
Save it to your desktop Open finder Click Air drop Drag the paper from your desktop to csd1945
