Vocabulary instruction leads to gains in comprehension.
Computer vocabulary instruction shows positive learning gains over traditional methods.
Pre-instruction of vocabulary words prior to reading can facilitate both vocabulary acquisition and comprehension.

It is important to be certain that students fully understand what is asked of them in the context of reading, rather than focusing only on the words to be learned. This is most effective for low-achieving or at-risk students.

While much is known about the importance of vocabulary to success in reading, there is little research on the best methods or combinations of methods of vocabulary instruction and the measurement of vocabulary growth and its relation to instruction methods. Therefore, dependence on a single vocabulary instruction method will not result in optimal learning.
