2 Statistics on Vocabulary
Vocabulary is 64% of all comprehension NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) reports that all state tests are based on this Vocabulary is probably the best single predictor of overall level of intelligence The number of words addressed to a child increases with income. ( Dr. David Monti, Central Connecticut State University)

3 Findings on vocabulary and implications for teaching reading (National Reading Panel, 2000)
Vocabulary instruction leads to gains in comprehension. Computer vocabulary instruction shows positive learning gains over traditional methods. Pre-instruction of vocabulary words prior to reading can facilitate both vocabulary acquisition and comprehension.

4 Most vocabulary learning occurs incidentally by immersion in knowledge (i.e.. reading).
Vocabulary learning is effective when it entails active engagement in learning tasks. Repeated exposure to vocabulary items is important for learning gains. The best gains were made in instruction that extended beyond single class periods and involved multiple exposures in authentic contexts beyond the classroom. Why biggest problem for ESL is vocab. Much of a student’s vocabulary will have to be learned in the course of doing things other than explicit vocabulary learning. Therefore, vocabulary should be taught both directly and indirectly. One needs 9 exposures to a vocabulary word before it is committed to memory. Importance of rich contexts and content area reading.

5 The restructuring of the text materials or procedures facilitates vocabulary acquisition and comprehension. It is important to be certain that students fully understand what is asked of them in the context of reading, rather than focusing only on the words to be learned. This is most effective for low-achieving or at-risk students. Example of restructuring, substituting easy for hard words. Biggest problem in vocabulary is making connections.

6 While much is known about the importance of vocabulary to success in reading, there is little research on the best methods or combinations of methods of vocabulary instruction and the measurement of vocabulary growth and its relation to instruction methods. Therefore, dependence on a single vocabulary instruction method will not result in optimal learning. Teachers need a toolbox. (packet of activities)
