1 Chapter 5 5.4 Using Imperial Units for Volume
Power Point Presentation 5.4 Chapter Using Imperial Units for Volume You will need your data pages to complete the following. Use only these data pages not your workbook for the conversions.

2 The following is a lesson on how to do a cubic conversion
The following is a lesson on how to do a cubic conversion. This is slightly different than a linear or area conversion. So pay close attention to the set up and the order things are done, because this is how you are to set up your conversions. (When marking assignments and tests we will be looking for the set up). As well look for the difference(s) between cubic and area and linear conversions.

3 Question: How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?

4 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
To begin start with what you know: 6 cu ft

5 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Next set up your conversion factor by adding a times sign and a line 6 cu ft x ________

6 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom - this way the units cancel out 6 cu ft x ________ cu in cu ft

7 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom - this way the units cancel out 6 cu ft x ________ cu in cu ft

8 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Then look at your data pages, you will see that you do not have the correct units to fill in your conversion. The data pages only include linear measurements. So you will have to build your conversion factor. When converting within the same system of units begin with the larger unit, in this case it is cu ft.

9 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore:

10 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 cu ft = 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft (however 1 ft = 12 inches) so

11 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 cu ft = 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft (however 1 ft = 12 inches) so 1 cu ft = 12 in x 12 in x 12 in

12 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore 1 cu ft = 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft (however 1 ft = 12 inches) so 1 cu ft = 12 in x 12 in x 12 in 1 cu ft = 1728 cu in

13 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 cu ft = 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft (however 1 ft = 12 inches) so 1 cu ft = 12 in x 12 in x 12 in 1 cu ft = 1728 cu in You have now created a conversion factor that you can use in your conversion

14 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Now substitute your conversion factor into the formula so that the numbers match up with the units: 6 cu ft x __1728__ cu in cu ft Remember to include your units.

15 How many cubic inches (cu in) are there in 6 cubic feet (cu ft)?
Solve the question (6 x 1728 ÷ 1) = 6 cu ft x __1728__ cu in = cu in cu ft Remember to include your units.

16 By setting up your conversion the same each time you will ensure that you get a correct answer.
This is the process that is to be used to complete all assignments, even if it is simple and you “know” how to do it, it is good to practice on those questions so that you will know how to do it on the harder questions.

17 Question How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?

18 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
To begin start with what you know: 135 ft3

19 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Next set up your conversion factor by adding a times sign and a line 135 ft3 x _________

20 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom - this way the units cancel out 135 ft3 x _________ yd3 ft3

21 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Write the units you want on the top and the units your getting rid of on the bottom- this way the units cancel out 135 ft3 x _________ yd3 ft3

22 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Remember that your data pages do not have the numbers you need to fill in your conversion, so you will have to build your conversion factor. When converting within the same system of units begin with the larger unit, in this case it is yd3.

23 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 yd3 = 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd (however 1 yd = 3 feet) so

24 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 yd3 = 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd (however 1 yd = 3 feet) so 1 yd3 = 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft

25 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 yd3 = 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd (however 1 yd = 3 feet) so 1 yd3 = 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft 1 yd3 = 27 ft3

26 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Remember that cubic comes from volume which is determined by length, width and height, therefore: 1 yd3 = 1 yd x 1 yd x 1 yd (however 1 yd = 3 feet) so 1 yd3 = 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft 1 yd3 = 27 ft3 This is your conversion factor.

27 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Fill in the conversion factor so that the numbers match up with the units. 135 ft3 x __1_______ yd3 ft3

28 How many cubic yards are there in 135 cubic feet?
Solve the question (135 x 1 ÷ 27 = ) 135 ft3 x __1_______ yd3 = 5 yd3 ft3 Remember to include your units.
