4 Can your genetic code be influenced by your environment?
Essential Question Can your genetic code be influenced by your environment? Standard B.6D – Recognize that gene expression is a regulated process

5 Temperature & Gene Expression

6 Water level affects the size of the leaves.
Phenotypes are always affected by their environment. In buttercup (Ranunculus peltatus), leaves below water-level are finely divided and those above water-level are broad, floating, photosynthetic leaf-like leaves. Siamese cats are darker on their extremities, due to temperature effects on phenotypic expression. Expression of phenotype is a result of interaction between genes and environment. Siamese cats and Himalayan rabbits both animals have dark colored fur on their extremities. This is caused by an allele that controls pigment production being able only to function at the lower temperatures of those extremities. Environment determines the phenotypic pattern of expression. Leaves above water are broad, below the water-level are finely divided

7 pH affects color. Acidic soil produces blue flowers and Alkaline soil produces pink.

8 After each video, create a 40 word quickwrite (minimum) in your bellwork journal answering the following question……. “What role did the environment have on the expression of the genes?”

9 Twin Studies Video What is the genetic make up of identical twins?
What have we found out about the expression of the genes in twins?

10 2. Turtles 2. Turtle Lays Eggs 3. Rabbits 4. Lactose Tolerance

11 D-News: Change your genes

12 Lab - Mutation Practice
PG 43 A C 43B - Back Page -Roles Person #1 – Doctor Person #2 – Expecting Parents Person #3 – Traveling to Africa Person #4 – Reporter -In your bellwork journal: Each person create 3 SENTENCES for YOUR response to the question, “Is genetic testing harmful or beneficial in regards to sickle-cell anemia?”. -Discuss with your 4 person-group your responses. -Create a 47 word Quickwrite summarizing your GROUP response on in your bellwork journal. All quickwrites should be the same. -When done with the quickwrite, answers questions on Page 43B. 43A - Front Page -Use the cubes to create the EXACT mRNA strand provided on the handout. -You will have an extra cube, you will use it later. -Use Page 31 (Notes Packet) and Page ?? (Codon Chart) help answer questions 1-7. (Ask 3, then me!) G U
