4 My wife, Lisbeth Welch-Stamos, is also an English teacher
My wife, Lisbeth Welch-Stamos, is also an English teacher. Last year she was the Saddleback valley Unified School District Teacher of the Year for the second time (she also won while teaching at Trabuco Hills in 2000) and is the only teacher in 46 year history of the district to be so honored TWICE, this makes her a very valuable asset to my teaching as well.

5 We have four children...Nick (28) who is married to Lisa (26)-who is also a teacher (1st grade). They live in Colorado Springs where they both graduated from the University of Colorado and three weeks ago she gave birth to my first grandchild-Blane!

6 My second son Alex (20) was a two time all-league player in the MVHS Football program. He is currently employed by the Boys and Girls Club of San Clemente and will be transferring from Saddleback College to Long Beach State to major in Journalism next fall.

7 My baby is Bryn (17), is a senior here at MVHS and a three-year varsity letterwoman on the Soccer team. She is also an anchor on our daily newscast, Diablo Heat.

8 We live in Trabuco Canyon—with our dog, Zeke.

9 How Students Learn 10% -Lecture….wah wah wah waaaah
They are asleep EYES WIDE OPEN in no time flat. How Students Learn

10 I temper this activity-but at the college level professors still lecture so I must do some of this to prepare them for next year!

11 How Students Learn 25% Video (motion picture)
If a picture is worth a thousand words then a well made motion picture must have some value but alas, the Captain Vidiot Teacher has killed this tool by showing stuff that killed class time and put students to sleep. How Students Learn

12 How Students Learn 50% Group Work!
In my class there is no such thing as a “group grade.” Each student is responsible for his or her piece of the pie and is graded accordingly. The alpha-dogs do not get dragged down by the slugs however, excessive “group work” can turn ugly real fast as students have trouble staying on task when left to their devices for too long How Students Learn

13 How Students Learn 75% Dramatic Role Playing …WORKS!
When students read the material with great enthusiasm with a dramatic flair (British/Scottish/Irish accents are encouraged) the works magically come alive and we learn! How Students Learn

14 How Students Learn 95% Experience it!...
One year I was able to take 24 students to England & Scotland which really did bring senior British Literature (or for Freshman World Literature) to life but aside from that we need to make it a “virtual experience” and so we pound the net constantly for clips and stills and utilizing the CTX projector it is much easier than now than it used to be to bring “old dead white guys” to life! How Students Learn

15 Teaching Philosophies
23 years ago I devised a class participation extra credit point system which has helped fuel these fires as well. The class that accumulates the most class participation XC points does not take the unit test AND . . .every member in the class receives an “A” for that unit of study and bringing the material “to life” with passionate readings helps greatly toward that end Teaching Philosophies

16 Teaching Philosophies
What other research says: THE TOP FIVE THINGS ADULTS SURVEYED SAY THEY LEARNED FROM A TEACHER: 96% I can achieve- I try to teach seniors that they also can be intellectual as this will be important where they are going-for 9th graders getting them up the achievement hill is paramount. Teaching Philosophies

17 Teaching Philosophies
89.5% Take responsibility for your education sometimes this involves a little “fake it until you make it!” attitude Teaching Philosophies

18 Teaching Philosophies
89% STICK WITH THE PROJECT Finish what you start and be a good team member. Teaching Philosophies

19 Teaching Philosophies
83.6% Use Creativity If one thing doesn’t work try another but do what you do best-put your best foot forward to earn the best grade. You aren’t going to lower the bar and must clear it to graduate. Teaching Philosophies

20 Teaching Philosophies
81.9% Develop problem solving skills If you are absent go to the website to see what we did and if that doesn’t help come see me at tutorial and we will work on it together. If all else fails as a reward to coming to OPEN HOUSE 2012-call me at that is my cell! Teaching Philosophies
