3 Ecology studies the interactions of living things with each other and their environment

4 Biosphere Biome Ecosystem Community Population Individual

5 Individual – an organism belonging to a particular species
Population – a group of individuals of the same species in a defined area Community – different populations of different species existing together (habitat level) Ecosystem – several different communities found together in a characteristic way Biome – different ecosystems found together in a single geographical zone and sharing the same climate conditions Biosphere – all the Earth’s varied biomes together, the thin life-bearing layer that forms the outer surface of the planet

6 The Biosphere is one of Earth’s 4 Systems
Lithosphere Hydrosphere Atmosphere Biosphere None of the Earth’s systems are independent, that is they are INTERDEPENDENT.

7 The Biosphere is the portion of Earth that supports living things unique to Earth dependent on the other Earth Systems

8 Are defined primarily by their temperature and annual precipitation
Deserts Tropical Rainforest Savannas Temperate Grasslands Temperate Deciduous Forest Temperate Evergreen Forest Taiga Tundra

11 The biosphere’s systems are called ECOSYSTEMS
All ecosystems must have a constant source of energy (usually the sun) and cycles to reuse raw materials. Examples are the water, nitrogen cycle, oxygen-CO2 cycle An ecosystem is made up of all the biotic and the abiotic components in a given area.

12 Biotic factors are all the living things or their materials that affect an organism in its environment  Examples include organisms, their parts, interaction, and wastes, disease Some Biotic Factors parasitism disease predation (one animal eating another)

13 ABIOTIC factors are the nonliving things in an environment
Examples are sunlight ,temperature, rainfall, climate and soil conditions

14 Habitat The place where a species naturally lives and grows.
A community consists of all of the living things that live and interact in an area called a habitat Habitat The place where a species naturally lives and grows. Consists of the characteristics of the soil, water, and biological community that allow the species to survive.

15 Organisms within a community interact with each other
-interaction can be within a population (species) or between populations Competition - many relationships involve competition for resources Some of the relationships can be symbiotic Symbiotic relationships involve two or more species in a close relationship Commensalism Mutualism Parasitism

16 Competition – the resources needed for life
are scarce in a habitat. - organisms have to compete for the resources to survive - competition among species forces each species to find a niche A niche is the a species position and function in an ecosystem - how a species makes a living or its job

17

18 has many components which include:
the climate a species can tolerate what a species eats time of day it is active

19 One species eats another

20 Both organisms benefit Egyptian Plover & Rhino
Plover eats parasites off of Flower provides food to the Rhino bee. The bee pollinates the flower Egyptian plover 20

21 One organism benefits, the other is not affected Clownfish & Anemone
The clownfish is protected by the anemone. The anemone isn’t affected

22 One organism benefits and the other is harmed

23 Biodiversity =The number of different species in an ecosystem
ecosystems with greater biodiversity are healthier and more stable - they produce a greater amount of plant material –plants produce the energy in an ecosystem - they recover better from natural disasters
