1 The Greatest Servant of All
John 13:1-11 Copy the good service you’ve received, not the poor service Be the giver, not the receiver; Accept the inequity; Take the lead; Bear the burden Difference between need and convenience Difference between contentment and comfort The Greatest Servant of All

2 Jesus wants to wash our feet
This is the One who brought the world into existence (John 1:3) This is the One in whom “all things hold together” (Colossians 1:17) He wants to use the power of the universe to service our needs (Ephesians 1:18-21) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

3 Jesus wants to wash our feet
This drive to serve speaks to His … Humility “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

4 Jesus wants to wash our feet
This drive to serve speaks to His … Compassion “Now as He approached the gate of the city, a dead man was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; … When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, ‘Do not weep.’ And He came up and touched the coffin; and the bearers came to a halt. And He said, ‘Young man, I say to you, arise!’ ” (Luke 7:12-14) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

5 Jesus wants to wash our feet
This drive to serve speaks to His … Graciousness “The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness. He will not always strive with us, nor will He keep His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.” (Psalm 103:8-10) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

6 Jesus wants to wash our feet
It motivates us to serve Him – and incorporate these traits in our service to others Humility (Philippians 2:3-5) Compassion (Matthew 9:36-38) Graciousness (Matthew 18:32-35) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

7 We need to let Jesus wash our feet
Insistence on not inconveniencing Him is egotism, not humility Refusing to accept His grace implies we can save ourselves by works (Ephesians 2:8-9; Luke 18:9-14) Fellowship with Jesus is not offered on any terms other than grace (Acts 15:11) If God offers to serve you, let Him! (Isaiah 7:10-13) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity

8 We must be bathed first Baptism before grace (Acts 22:16)
Baptism does not guarantee ongoing grace (John 13:10-11; Acts 8:13, 23; Galatians 3:27, 5:4) “Grace upon grace” (John 1:16) comes from appealing for a good conscience (1 Peter 3:21), then striving to be found in holiness (1 Thessalonians 3:11-13) Jesus wants to wash our feet We need Jesus to wash our feet We must be bathed first – Jesus can only be gracious to those who commit to purification – baptism first, life of purity second; grace is not a substitute for purity
